“Only the little people suffer at the hands of Justice; the creatures of power slide from under it with a wink and a grin.”

3.5 stars Altered Carbon is a technically great book that I liked, but didn’t completely click for me in a way that I expected it to. Its premise drew me in, and the stylistic excellence of Richard K. Morgan’s prose lends itself equally well to technobabble, gritty noir dialogue, and surrealism. He’s also created a compelling, hyper-competent lead character in Takeshi Kovacs, who plays up the strong and silent thing to great effect but also employs cutting, dark humor with aplomb. The idea is this: […]

Teenage hawk identity crisis.

I never cared as a kid, but as an adult, wow; this book is bleak. Well, I shouldn’t say “bleak,” because ultimately, the book does have a relatively uplifting ending, and I tend to associate bleakness with a lack of hope or optimism, which isn’t this series at all, no matter how dark it goes. But I think this book and what it’s willing to do with Tobias’s character is an example of one of the many reasons I loved this series so much when […]

In pain of a heart forbade to fly. But you learn to say goodbye.

I knew very little about this book going into it other than it was considered to be a Science Fiction classic and that SyFy recently produced a miniseries adaptation of it. When it popped up on sale for $1.99 on Kindle shortly after that, I figured it would be a good time to fill in some of the gaps in my SciFi reading (long story short. My parents were SciFi nerds. I rebelled by being a horror/true crime fanatic). I’m glad I waited until I […]

This is Why I Hate Starting a Series While it is Still Being Written

April 12, 2016 by melanir 5 Comments

LALKJSLKJHODIJHOIELSLIDFGOWLS. Stupid book and it’s stupid ending and stupid authors for not finishing the series yet. AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH Which is not actually a review, I acknowledge. If you’ll allow me a moment to compose myself, let me see if I can put something coherent together. So yea, this book… GUYS I NEEED THE NEXT ONE NOW. Ahem, I mean it doesn’t really end on a cliffhanger, but it does a little bit and that is enough to make me want to scream. It’s close enough to a cliffhanger […]

Exploring a sprawling, new world

April 12, 2016 by expandingbookshelf 1 Comment

I’ve never read anything quite like Ken Liu’s debut novel The Grace of Kings.I’ve been trying to figure out how to explain it for a week now and the closest I can come to is this: Chinese history meets The Iliad meets Game of Thrones. Sometimes it reads like a history book…and then our heroes wage their wars on the backs of whales or from steampunk-inspired hot air balloons. Sprawling and ambitious, I couldn’t help but cheer for this book, even when I didn’t love […]
