AI with Feelings

May 6, 2016 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

4.5 stars My goal this Cannonball is to read a bunch of sci-fi fantasy and books in general not written by white dudes. I saw that Ancillary Justice had won many awards including the Hugo and Nebula awards. It was also highly recommended by NPR Books. It tells the story of Breq, formerly the Justice of Torren, a ship that is part of the Radch Empire. The ship is controlled by a sentient AI with physical bodies called ancillaries. The story alternates between the present […]

The Couple that Slays Together Stays Together

May 5, 2016 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I don’t know how Married with Zombies came to be on my Goodreads recommendation list, perhaps Warm Bodies or even Station Eleven triggered its algorithim. The writing style is very amateurish but the story is cute enough- it’s a silly, mostly enjoyable take on the zombie apocalypse. But I have to say, the zombie plague saved my marriage. And if you follow the rules, have each other’s backs and stick together… it could save yours, too Sarah and Dave are trying to save their relationship through marriage counseling, unfortunately on their way […]

This book also has a drone in it that just delivers burritos. That is the dream.

This was the best fart/poop/butt joke book collection I’ve ever read that also happens to have a plot. Despite it not being exactly everything I hoped it would be, this book had me about three pages in when the heroine (ordering fast food while sitting in her self-driving car) contemplates how did people ever “eat their car chili” if they had to keep their hands on the steering wheel. This girl clearly has her priorities straight. If the future allows me to eat car chili while cruising down […]

Am I Possessed by an Alien Right Now or Not?

May 4, 2016 by Andrea Krieter Leave a Comment

Rating:4.0/5 Summary: When something goes majorly wrong on the Icarus spacecraft, rich heiress Lilac LaRoux and newly decorated General Tarver Merendsen, become trapped in a space pod. It’s only thanks to Lilac’s familiarity and mechanical skill that they get their pod to launch and narrowly evade death. After crash landing on a seemly empty, but terraformed planet, they begin their search for the ship and inhabitants of the planet. Strange visions accost the pair and they believe they’re going crazy, but maybe there’s something else […]

I volunteer

3.5 stars I can tell this is going to be a very fun comic series to follow, bringing the list of comic series I follow up to 2 (Saga is the other.) The first volume of Bitch Planet is very introductory, as we meet our main Bitches, learn a little of some of their backstories, and get a broad overview of what’s going on at Bitch Planet (a derogatory term for the off-Earth prison, where the actual name is some euphemistic acronym to do with […]

Flames…FLAMES…on the side of my face…

May 2, 2016 by Bothari43 5 Comments

I don’t think I can handle a coherent review on this one. Sputtering outrage, yes. Actual reasonable thoughts? No. See that picture over there? All those little pieces of paper are where I flagged sexist stuff. There are only two women in the book, basically, so that gap at the beginning is when neither of them had shown up yet, and that gap in the middle was because I just got too tired of outrage. This is your brain on fantasy/sci fi from the 1960s. Sigh. […]
