I had so much fun listening to this. Sometimes you just need nerd fluff.

Martin Banks is a jackass. That’s all I kept thinking during the first half or so of this book. To be clear, my thinking the main character was a jackass in no way hindered my enjoyment of the story. In fact, I’m fairly certain the book encouraged that opinion. See, one day Martin is sitting at home being lazy, hacking websites just for the fun of it (he sees himself as a benevolent hacker, because he doesn’t cause any harm–he just likes doing it) when […]

It’s mighty morphin’ dolphin time.

The Message is our first Cassie book, and that means it’s time to question the morality of our actions. Hurray. In all honesty, when I was a kid, sometimes Cassie’s books frustrated me a little bit. I thought she was a wet blanket and her hair was boring. I could never understand why she was always questioning everything, like, shouldn’t it just be obvious what’s right and wrong? Why are you so upset all the time, girl? Calm down and just enjoy turning into a […]

A good ending to a good series.

May 10, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

If I was just rating the story of this book (and this series), I would probably give it all five stars. But holy crap, Pierce Brown’s writing style is so melodramatic and self-serious sometimes, his prose so purple, I think it must be suffocating from a lack of oxygen. When he forgets to try to be Important and A Good Writer and just writes, his story shines. Oh, and Sevro is amazing. So this is the last book in the Red Rising trilogy (but not […]

Apocalyptic!

May 10, 2016 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Science fiction writer Connie Willis is the winner of numerous Hugo and Nebula awards, including one of each for The Doomsday Book. This novel is an ingenious combination of themes such as time travel, pandemics, and faith. Her characters, whether Oxford University researchers in 2054 or English villagers in the 14th century, are fully realized individuals, with responsibilities, fears, jealousies, and loves. They will all be put to the test when tragedy strikes, and we see that, despite a 700 year time divide, people are […]

This book gave me emotional whiplash.

May 9, 2016 by Amanda 11 Comments

UUUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHHH is my main reaction to this book.  My feelings can also be summed up like so: The whole thing was just so very, very frustrating mostly because there was some legitimately brilliant writing but the sexism was almost overwhelming. There will be spoilers for the first book in this review and while I’m going to try to avoid major plot spoilers for the second book, it will be impossible to adequately convey my frustrations with the book without talking about some of the things […]

I actually went to bed early tonight, so I could lay in bed and finish this book!

May 7, 2016 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I unabashedly loved this book. I borrowed it from the library as an ebook. I couldnt wait to climb into bed each night and read it! I thought that the characters were all well written and realistic. The two time periods were also very different and well explained. I’m not sure how to write a review of this book without being spoilery, so here’s your warning: SPOILERS AHEAD!! Kivrin is one of the main characters in this story. She’s an historian, and in the future […]
