Friends, Book Lovers, Cannonballers, lend me your eyeballs! It is time to post the preview for our discussion topics for Doomsday Book. As some of you may know I have not yet finished myself (80% and counting!), but with so much happening on the page there is plenty to talk about even before I reach the end. Some of you have already posted glowing reviews of Connie Willis’ book, and those of you that are finishing up should feel free to review before our discussion if […]
“I was horny, and scared, and so confused about everything.”
I don’t even know how to review this book (which is why I’ve put it off for a week). It definitely grabbed my attention, but I have no idea if I really liked it or not… “History provides a compelling argument that every scientist who tinkers around with unstoppable shit needs a reliable flamethrower.” Andrew Szerba is 16, lives in a small town in Iowa, and has a major obsession with history — primarily his own, but also the general way that lines of history cross […]
Why hast thou forsaken me?
There is a scene in Connie Willis’ To Say Nothing of the Dog that has stayed with me. Our intrepid historian, Ned, accidentally travels back to the Middle Ages for a short time and witnesses a scene that is repeated in the book in three different historical moments – a woman is asking a man why he hasn’t done a thing she asked him to do and the man is making excuses. Ned cannot understand the words the woman and man are speaking, because English […]
I’m a diamond in the rough, a shiny piece of coal
I’ve now read this twice. I read it immediately upon learning that it was based on Jane Austen’s Persuasion, which (as I get older) is slowly overtaking Pride & Prejudice for my favorite Austen novel. Pride & Prejudice is the novel that made me fall in love with Jane Austen. Persuasion is the one that kicked me straight in the heart for hundreds of pages. Something about regret and missed chances…it takes age to truly begin to appreciate it and really FEEL it. Not that […]
The Star Wars reading continues
There are so many options for kids and adults who love Star Wars stories. This one is subtitled “An Original Retelling of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.” Truth in advertising. The story is told in the 2nd person, putting the reader in Luke Skywalker’s place. It’s an interesting way of looking at The Empire Strikes Back – the author is excellent at creating a sense of place and really allowing you to see through Luke’s eyes. He also has a sense of humor about […]
This story is as original as I’ve ever read, and totally engrossing
This was a Kindle first for May, and most of the “firsts” are hit or miss. Some of them are fantastic, and I find a new author to follow. Some of them are terrible and I can’t wait to be done with them. Thankfully this book fell into the first category. I absolutely loved it. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book where I could call the story mostly original. The only unoriginal part of this story is that there’s a bad guy […]
