It’s 1962. The Allies lost World War II. Slavery is legal. The United States has been divided by its conquerors, with the Japanese ruling the West, and the Germans in the East, with a small No Man’s Land in the Rocky Mountains. The Nazis have exterminated Africans, drained the Mediterranean to make space for farmland, and developed and used the hydrogen bomb. Not content to only take over the world, they’ve started colonizing space. Meanwhile, there’s a book. It’s not banned, but it’s […]
Another plague book… I might be in a slump
This is my half Cannonball book! I just realized that ?. Twenty-six is as far as I got last year, so hurray for me! Anyway, onward to the book. So i guess my title is a bit misleading. It’s not really a plague book, so much as a bio-terrorism story. It starts out with some scary Spanish flu stuff. They call it the Spanish lady. A Korean village is struck with the Spanish flu somehow, and in the middle of the night, the government decimates […]
Falling in the “3.5 stars, rounded up to 4” camp
Well, I tried to finish this in time for the book club discussion (which I plan to read through today if possible!), but life and m’fing Peacock Emporium got in the way. Nevertheless, I did enjoy it, and while I can see why some people dinged it for certain things, I still felt it was a pretty good read overall. “I wanted to come, and if I hadn’t, they would have been all alone, and nobody would have ever known how frightened and brave and irreplaceable they were.” […]
And here’s mine.
3.5 stars I think the fact that I read this book in a feverish cram session over the course of two days (to prepare for the CBR8 Book Club discussion) had a lot to do with how much I enjoyed it, which is to say that by necessity, I skimmed over anything that just wasn’t jumping out as MEGA IMPORTANT and, in real-time, was kind of minimizing how much of that material existed or how often that happened. In hindsight, it was actually rather frequently. […]
The Seinfeld of Sci-Fi – The Time Travel Book about Nothing
I don’t have a lot of time for a robust review, so I’ll sum up some of my thoughts up, list style. I’m not a regular science fiction reader. I like action, and character development. If you like all the parts in “Lord of the Rings” where they are walking and not a lot is happening, this book is for you. I liked a lot of the elements of this book (time travel as commonplace, dual timelines, misdirection and mystery, historical context) but altogether I […]
Book Club Discussion Post: Doomsday Book
Welcome to our June Book Discussion of Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. It looks like lots of you have read this book and are ready to chat about it with your fellow readers. I’ve been looking forward to having this discussion since I finished the book. Let’s dig in! But first, let’s start with a few ground rules: Since we’re anticipating lots of conversation, please try your best to reply directly to each other, that way they are alerted and can keep discussing! Discussing is […]
