“I don’t want to go on the cart! I feel fine. I think I’ll to go for a walk!”

June 19, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

3.5 stars Kivrin Engle is a young history student at Oxford University, whose dream it is to time travel back in time to the Middle Ages. You see, in the 2050s, historians have the option to travel back in time as a research tool, to truly discover what the past was like. Most historians travel back to the early to mid 20th Century, and there are certain periods that are deemed far too dangerous. The Middle Ages has generally been deemed one of them, due […]

Ok, back to Star Wars books

June 16, 2016 by Walking Widdershins 2 Comments

I love that my kid is so into Star Wars instead of some other crap that I wouldn’t be able to like or share with him. Although there have been some hints of Pokemon popping up, I may assign that to my husband. Mommy ain’t got time for that. So this is a kid-focused Star Wars-adjacent book. The story takes place at McQuarrie Middle School, with the kids in 6th Grade. It’s presented as a “case file,” investigating whether an Origami Yoda finger puppet made […]

I for one welcome our Robot Overlords

June 16, 2016 by ChainedVase Leave a Comment

I wish I had more time to read grownup books, but spending 12 hours a day with tiny humans allows no time to focus on books during the day and a habit of falling asleep watching Poirot every night by 9 pm. I do read a ton of picture books though, so… RoboSauce is by the same authors as Dragons Love Tacos, which I also highly recommend. Their writing style is conversational; they address the reader as “kid” and speak directly to her/him. I love […]

I loved all these crazy birds

June 14, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 2 Comments

This is a deliciously weird book, and if people have love-it or hate-it reactions to it I could not be less surprised. There are often very pretentious and meta conversations among geeks regarding the differences that delineate (with very fluid, hazy borders) fantasy and science fiction. Sometimes, this happens because of “bad” sci-fi, that doesn’t actually explain its science very well, and gaps in the world building may as well be explained by magic. All the Birds in the Sky deliberately takes this idea and […]

I didn’t like it, and I feel really bad about that

June 10, 2016 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I tried really, really hard to like this book — after all, I sunk 48 hours of my life listening to it. And I’ve loved every other book I’ve read/listened to by Neal Stephenson. But in the end — I just couldn’t get into it. I finished it, but by the end it felt like a chore. “If you can’t test it, it’s not theorics — it’s metatheorics. A branch of philosophy. So, if you want to think of it this way, our test equipment is what […]

Sci-fi? Yes! Star Trek? Kinda! Inceptionesque Metafiction? Wait…what?

June 8, 2016 by Red Panda Kitty 3 Comments

This book was a very quick read. I don’t know how many pages it is actually, because I read it on my kindle, but it only took about six hours to finish. It’s hard for me to review, because I don’t want to give anything away, but here goes. The beginning of the story takes place in the 25th century, and the characters are members of the Universal Union, and crew on the starship Intrepid. If it sounds a lot like Star Trek, it’s supposed […]
