My son (age 8) came into my room one night with a very serious expression after having finished this graphic novel. “This was kind of scary and kind of sad and…here.” He had that glazed look of someone who’s just torn through a whole book, captivated, and hasn’t quite woken from it yet. Obviously, I was delighted. So I read this, and then my daughter (age 11) read it. We were all similarly captivated, though clearly this is focused for children. When gauging if this […]
The Answer is 42
I’ve been looking for a science fiction text to read with my Sophomores. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is one of those books that ends up on sci-fi book lists. Plus those that like the book REALLY like the book. The plot’s basically about an earthling (Arthur) who gets rescued by an alien (Ford) when an alien race comes and destroys Earth. The rest of the novel is the exploits of Arthur and Ford as they encounter a galactic politician, Zaphod, who’s out to get […]
You are entering the Red Zone. Proceed at own risk. When in doubt, run.
I consider myself very lucky that I discovered Justin Cronin’s “The Passage” series only last summer, so the wait for City of Mirrors was much less painful and dramatic than it would have been if I’d been reading in real time: The Passage was published in 2010 and The Twelve in 2012. City of Mirrors came out four weeks ago. That’s not on a George R. R. Martin level, but still could have been a brutal wait for me. Whew! I love this series. I […]
Ancillary Thoughts
I love it when you read tons of awesome books on your vacation. The Imperial Radch books, which I read back-to-back, were a great vacation read. They’re thought provoking science fiction wrapped up in good fun space opera, and really that’s all I wanted. I’m going to do one big review for all three books because the things I want to say about the books are true for all three novels, and to be honest I’m not sure that I could really untangle the last two […]
If only I’d read this right after the others
Winter is the conclusion to Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles and neatly wraps up the story in a tidy little bow, maybe a bit too tidy if I’m honest. I’m not exactly sure what happened here, but I did not enjoy this entry as much as the previous books in this series. I blew through the Lunar Chronicles sometime last year and thought they were excellent YA, but I had been putting of reading this one and ended up skimming through most if it and outright skipping […]
20 years late to the party. I’m surprisingly out of place.
The Giver (1993) – reviewed 4 times previously (3.75 avg) I love dystopian fiction. Give me a zombie apocalypse or oppressive regime, and I’m happy. Unless we’re talking about really having to live under those circumstances, in which case you can count me out. So The Giver should be right up my alley. Only….well, it’s written for 14 year olds. It’s not that this isn’t a good book, I’m just 20 years too old for it. This book is trimmed of any excess. There’s a […]
