The introductions to these characters are over, so now it’s time to get real, I guess. With POV books from all the characters excepting Ax* in the bag, these kids are now all in on the fight against the Yeerks, even if they’re not really sure what that means at this point. Sure, they’ve had some harrowing experiences (this whole thing was started with an alien brutally murdering another in front of them, after all), but they’re kids, and so they don’t yet know what […]
Let me tell you what I wish I’d known, when I was young and dreamed of glory
I finished this book weeks (months?) ago and am still not really sure what to say about it. It’s The Stand. Like. Everyone knows about it, yeah? It seems silly to even attempt a review but attempt I shall. The Stand is about good versus evil, the perseverance of the human spirit, and hope. It’s also got some really super gross parts, and some bits that have NOT stood the test of time and made me cringe because PHRASING, Stephen King, PHRASING. (That was supposed […]
Something a bit familiar about this one…
It’s time for the post-vacation reviews. I read (almost) 4 books and the details are getting a bit hazy a few days after my return. This was the first of the week and the least memorable for me. Darrow lives on Mars as a Red, the lowest in the intergalactic caste system. He’s a young married miner, special amongst his people, but oppressed by the powers that be. A tragedy propels him out of his subterranean bubble and into the world of the upper castes, […]
Wayward Pines – Reviews 14-16
I’m probably the last person to read these books, but I finally got around to it. I’m still not sure how I feel about the series. They’re either the most brilliant things I’ve ever read, or the dumbest thing ever put on paper (or screen, in my case). Don’t get me wrong, the books are compelling, and I lost a couple of nights of decent sleep because I just had to find out what was going to happen next. But (spoilers ahead, in case I’m not […]
I Just Fear the Boredom
I have to admit didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first in the trilogy. As with the first, I was listening to the audiobook (and with many interruptions as I spend a lot of time listening to political podcasts in between audiobook listens), so maybe it’s better in book form, but I found it rather a confusing series of events with much less character development. I’ve heard there’s a ton of typos in the paperback, though, so that probably would have driven me nuts. […]
John Scalzi is good to me
My reading pace this year has slowed down seemingly tremendously, though in actuality probably not that much. The consequence of this is that my first temptation is, when I do have a spare moment to read, to only read books that I suspect I’ll race through quickly so I can get that quick high off finishing a story. That impulse has led me to put off reading the Old Man’s War series, despite it sitting near the top of my TBR for the last three […]
