YOU KNOW WHAT I LIKE THE NEW CANON EU. I LIKE IT A LOT.

September 29, 2016 by narfna Leave a Comment

The good news is this book is better than the first one. The bad news is . . . well, there isn’t really any bad news. This book is better than the first one. The end. Most of the stuff that annoyed me in the first book (the style being so omnipresent it pulled me out of the story, the occasional colloquialism that shouldn’t be in Star Wars, etc.) is gone. Either that or I didn’t notice. Either way, same result. The POV is still […]

“GGWWWRGHH.”

September 28, 2016 by Halbs 1 Comment

A lot of Star Wars fans were nervous when Marvel/Disney took over Star Wars comics from Dark Horse. For years, DH had told some amazing stories in the Star Wars universe through the medium of comics. It was unclear whether Marvel would live up to Dark Horse’s standards, or if it would just publish tie-in garbage. While I am only a casual Star Wars fan, I am a true comic book nerd. I am happy to report that Marvel is doing great with Star Wars. They […]

Time to get your 80’s on in a nerdy, techie way

September 26, 2016 by genericwhitegirl Leave a Comment

Here’s a bit of 80’s pop culture/classic gamer porn for those of you who are into that kind of thing. It’s a bit over the top complicated but fun nonetheless. The year is 2044 and the internet has evolved into the OASIS. This is basically where everyone goes when they go online, and depending on your gear, you’ll wear wear haptic gloves, a head visor, and maybe even a haptic suit. While the OASIS was originally created as a gaming environment, it evolved into meeting […]

The only rival to the cold detachment of science is the cold detachment of Arthur C. Clarke

September 26, 2016 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

Years ago, while still in college, my girlfriend and I went on a year-long Star Trek binge by renting all of The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, and Voyager from Netflix. One night, after watching a few episodes, I went outside to put the disc (this was before Netflix was predominantly a streaming service) in the mailbox, and noticed the night sky emblazoned by a full moon. I stood beneath the pristine glow of that autumnal moon and pondered our place in the universe. I […]

More Scalzi sarcasm, in teenage girl form

September 26, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 2 Comments

In my micro review for The Last Colony, the third and previous book in this series, I noted that the third book was the last in the series, considered in a traditional fashion. That’s because Zoe’s Tale is an alternate POV re-telling of The Last Colony, and the books that follow are also a little different in their structure, but I’ll get to that in those reviews. Alternate POV novelizations aren’t unheard of, but they’re tricky to pull off and are often viewed by more […]

Arena

September 25, 2016 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

“Arena” is the debut novel by Holly Jennings, another subscription pick by my bookstore.  “Arena” sat on my bookshelf for several months after coming home from the bookstore.  The opening blurb on the inside cover reads, “EVERY WEEK, KALI LING FIGHTS TO THE DEATH ON NATIONAL TV.  SHE’S DIED HUNDREDS OF TIMES.  AND IT NEVER GETS EASIER…..”.  After it stops shouting, you are informed how she is part of a Virtual Gaming League, competing in the premier tournament of the season.  “And though their weapons and […]
