So, look. Typically in my reviews I go the very remedial route of talking about broad themes from the book, how well the characters and/or worldbuilding were developed, and I comment on the pacing and overall competence of the plot. If I am very lucky, something will stand out that either makes me want to rant, or go on a gushing squeefest, and I can write a better than milquetoast review. When you get to the sixth book in a consistently excellent series, there isn’t […]
Forty-seven hours of book!
So this is a newer, more inclusive, unabridged version of The Stand. There are some extra details that weren’t in the original book. Having never read the original book, I will not know the difference. The audiobook (which I borrowed from my library and downloaded immediately!) is forty-seven hours. I’m determined to finish it in less than forty-seven days! I’m going to split up my review into a bunch of parts, because with a book this long, I don’t want stuff to get missed. OVERALL […]
“One of the extraordinary adaptive powers of our species is its ability to transmute a stray encounter into a first chapter.”
One of things that I love about Goodreads is that it helps you discover sequels that you never knew existed. When I logged my review of Neverwhere a couple weeks ago, Goodreads called it Neverwhere (London Below, The World of Neverwhere), indicating that other stories must exist in the series! In this instance, it referred to a short story called How the Marquis Got His Coat Back. Google told me it was published in The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2015, so…here we are! While the story of […]
Paper Girls, Vol. 2
Where on earth does Brian K Vaughan get his ideas? He’s so inventive, creating fascinating worlds with tonnes of lore just lurking beneath the surface. Everything I’ve read of his provokes far more questions than it answers, and I love it. Paper Girls weaves a thrilling mystery, and I’m glad I waited for the volume instead of picking it up issue by issue, but I’m still anxious to read more! I can’t get into the details of Volume Two without spoiling part of Volume One, […]
Degrees of Freedom: The Metrozone Series, Book 3
The third book in Morden’s Petrovich trilogy finds our hero standing as a figure of rebellion, symbolically trying to rescue the AI that the Americans tried to destroy in the previous book. His city is starting to rebuild itself, but his personal life has slid into a series of of soap opera plots. Once again, there are a series of international conspiracies that all seem to circle around him – the Americans want to make sure the AI named Michael is done once and for […]
Princess Leia takes center stage in the excellent Star Wars: Bloodline
This new iteration of Star Wars since Disney purchased them a few years back is not the Star Wars that we grew up on. While The Force Awakens largely played it safe there were a few key differences that have set the continuation of the story apart. First, most of the characters exist in a moral gray area now. The days of the EVEEL Emperor and sneering Imperial toadies is largely behind us. Secondly, these stories are primarily female driven. So far both of the […]
