This is the second book in The Chronicles of Saint Mary’s and like the first book; I listened to this one in audio form. I’m still not 100% sold on audio format, but I like the narrator for this series and I had a long, brainless task at work that needed to get done so an audio book was called for. So once again, I dived into the chaotic world of Saint Mary’s. I suppose the basic plot of A Symphony of Echoes is that […]
Ever wonder how your life could’ve been different if you made different choices?
Ok, so my lovely little library in NEPA had this as an audiobook too! That’s apparently my new thing for CBR9. I will let other people read me books at times where it is unsafe for me to read them to myself (whilst driving, in the shower, treadmilling, etc.). I use the Overdrive app on my phone, so my books travel with me always. It’s rad. I believe I’ve raved about it for earlier books (The Stand, which was 47 hours would’ve been unreadable for […]
The Obelisks are so much cooler than previously thought!
Oh my goodness gang! Ms. Jemisin knocks it out of the park yet again. You know how in a lot of trilogies you assume the second book is just filler, getting everyone in place for the final act so you don’t really read it as closely? Yeah, that doesn’t happen here. This one is just as good, and arguably better than The Fifth Season. Spoilers abound below folks. Go read both first. I’ll wait, and then we can all wait impatiently for the final installment […]
Challenging isn’t always satisfying…
I’ll admit, I mainly sought out and purchased this book because of the praise for The Arrival (which I just saw last night and was fantastic!) and wanted to know what all the fuss was about before seeing the movie. The Stories of Your Life and Others is a collection of ten short stories by Ted Chaing. Instead of commenting on each story individually, I’m going to pick a couple of my favorites. Story of Your Life is hard to summarize for me – I found it heartbreaking, yet […]
An intriguing short story collection
After reading Forest of Memory, I decided that I needed even more Mary Robinette Kowal. So when I heard about a few of her short stories, I decided I needed to track them down. I discovered Word Puppets, an anthology with an introduction by Patrick Rothfuss. I was sold. Read the introduction first because it is hilarious. And even with his intro to Kowal, Rothfuss manages to cement the collection with major themes and ideas from Kowal’s work. It’s a great way to think about […]
A strange but intriguing little tale
’ve been going through a Glamourist Histories withdrawal. I’ve been wishing that the series wasn’t over, even though I was really happy with the way Mary Robinette Kowal wrapped it up. I did a library search to see what else I could read and happily, there are a few things left that I had not yet uncovered. I decided to start with a novella, Forest of Memory. It’s a short, tense, and captivating read, and you see where Kowal’s fantasy and sci-fi roots take hold. […]
