A field trip for the ages

Lost In The Future V01: The Storm by Damian

October 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lost In The Future V01: The Storm by Damian and illustrated by Alex Fuentes is a fun adventure story in a graphic novel format, that is short, (maybe not sweet) but has some interesting segments. It has the action and the friendship aspects that keep things moving without being “too much” adventure and no plot, or all plot and not enough action.  The art is the real drawback for me with the too Nickelodeon-like and/or Uncle Grandpa/Gravity Falls/Steven Universe/The Amazing World of Gumball/etc. images. From […]

Surprisingly modern for stories written over 30 years ago.

Terminal Boredom by Izumi Suzuki

October 21, 2024 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

Izumi Suzuki is a bit of a counter-cultural cult icon in Japan, though I’d never heard of her before reading this book. Born in 1949, she arose in a society itching to break away from American occupation and western influence. This was the era of Yukio Mishima, actor, model, and poet who attempted to overthrow a right-wing, ultra-nationalist overthrow of the government before failing and committing seppuku. The ’60s were a tumultuous time in Japan, as they were in many parts of the world. In […]

I had high hopes, but they didn’t fly as far as I wanted… still a good book

Teen Titans: Starfire by Kami Garcia

October 15, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Teen Titan story continues as we find our Starfire and Cyborg to round out the team in Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo’s fifth book, Teen Titans: Starfire. As much as I have enjoyed the series, this might be the weakest volume so far. It probably was because I had such high expectations for it. While I knew a little about the Robins (Dick and Damian) I wasn’t versed in Teen Titans. The first three graphic novels were good as I got to learn about […]

The Cheese don’t stink

Lisa Cheese and Ghost Guitar (Book 1): Attack of the Snack by Kevin Alvir

October 15, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lisa Cheese and Ghost Guitar (Book 1): Attack of the Snack by Kevin Alvir is a lot of things. I was about half way through when I realized it probably was mostly a commentary on capitalism, mom & pop stores vs. the big man and the greed of “bigger and better” and addiction to that (via fast food joints).  It is a story of love and friendship and demon possession. If a humanoid-unicorn had a superhero origin story this would be it. There was more […]

Intriguing, but Confusing

The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton

The story: A small group of villagers on an island are the last survivors on Earth after a deadly fog wiped out most of humanity. The residents of the village include regular villagers as well as three “elders,” who are scientists that work to keep the fog at bay thanks to a complex security system and lead the island. One morning the villagers awake to discover that one of the scientists has been murdered, and this murder has triggered a change in the security system. […]

“It’s about being treated as a thing, isn’t it. You’re a thing, and there is no safety.”

Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory (The Murderbot Diaries #4.5) by Martha Wells

October 12, 2024 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory is the last new-to-me Murderbot other than the most recent novel last year’s System Collapse (I’m planning on getting to it before the year is out, but we’ll see how I do). I knew very little going in, just that it was Mensah’s POV, occurred immediately after the events of Exit Strategy, that it was initially given free to people who pre-ordered Network Effect (its now free online), and that it was a short story.   Knowing that, I still don’t […]
