Maybe humans aren’t the most deserving of a new planet

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

December 21, 2024 by genericwhitegirl 2 Comments

I read this book to get my brother to stop talking about alien *insert creepy animal here (I don’t want to spoil it)*. Every time I’d see him, he would ask if I read Children of Time and then proceed to explain the premise as if he hadn’t explained it to me the last time I saw him. After maybe the fourth or fifth time I decided to read the book to shut him up. Look, I’m not a big sci-fi reader, but this one […]

Chaotic Orbits? Yes, Please!

Full Speed to a Crash Landing by Beth Revis

How to Steal a Galaxy by Beth Revis

December 19, 2024 by Emmalita 4 Comments

After seeing Beth Revis talk about mocking a particular billionaire in her new sci-fi heist series, I saw that the Audible sale made it very very affordable. So I bought it, listened to it, and then bought the second book on sale, too. Sadly, the third book, Last Chance to Save the World, isn’t out until April. The story is great. The primary narrator, Dara Rosenberg, is a delight. The secondary narrator, David Bendena perfectly expresses his character’s frustration in each book’s epilogue. I highly […]

He thought his girlfriend kept him grounded, but he got a shock one night

Static Up All Night (volume 1) by Lamar Giles

December 17, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Static Up All Night (volume 1) by Lamar Giles and illustrated by Paris Alleyne is a nice teen superhero story.  Our main character, Virgil, is trying to balance a normal life and being a superhero. Set in the DC universe, we have mutant humans (mostly still looking human) that were created by a supposedly safe gas. Afterwards, those who made it were given some sort of powers (one girl hasn’t slept literally since it happened, so she has time to study, do multiple jobs, and […]

Hunt the Stars by Jessie Mihalik

Captain Tavi Zarola does her best to keep her crew fed and her ship in working condition, but sometimes jobs are thin on the ground.  Which means she’s not in a position to turn down an extremely lucrative job, even it comes from General Torran Fletcher, who was on the opposite side of the war.  It certainly doesn’t help that Fletcher insists on accompanying Tavi’s crew along with his own team.  The war might be over, but it left scars on both sides.  But as […]

“I hope you are finding your own words out there in my sky.”

The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei

December 15, 2024 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Asuka was the last person chosen to join the crew for humanity’s last hope, eighty elite graduates of a competitive program who will give birth to a generation of children in deep space and one day reach a distant but livable planet. But when a bomb kills three of the crew, investigating it falls to Asuka. I’m trying to get more into science fiction lately, and between the creative world-building and the high-stakes mystery, this book was certainly a good addition to the roster. In […]

Can Travis master the Legendary Sword of Legends and fulfill his cosmic destiny? Without his parents learning he isn’t at fencing practice?

Travis Daventhorpe Powers Up! by Wes Molebash

December 13, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

After a couple of more edgier titles, and a biography/memoir of Andy Warhol, I wanted something light to read. I found in my online reader copies Travis Daventhorpe Powers Up! by Wes Molebash. This is the second book in the series.  Since both volumes are currently available, I recommend reading them as closely together as possible, as there were several pieces I had forgotten about book one. Besides, it is fun to see how they pick up where we left off in book one. All the […]
