“Towns like this are for people who like the way down.”

Neuromancer by William Gibson

July 22, 2025 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Reading the “classics” of a subgenre is sometimes an underwhelming experience. Decades of creators have had opportunities to explore and expand the subgenre. By the time one gets to the roots, a novel can sometimes be more of a respected artifact than an engaging book. Unfortunately, that is what happened to me with Gibson’s famous Neuromancer. That being said, it was still an enjoyable page-turner. The story centers on Case, a digital cowboy. He is a talented (and drug-addled) data thief in the matrix, a sort […]

the presence of true innovation in literature is one of the most hopeful facets of reading

Of Monsters and Mainframes by Barbara Truelove

BINGO: migrant, as everyone on these ships is migration to/from Earth and Alpha Centuri hot take who would have thought that a book about AIs and the limitations of their programming would touch my squishy organic heart so much and be the first thing in a while I’ve read that I genuinely didn’t want to put down, and which I didn’t know how it would end! What a quirky little book that absolutely nails its gimmick from the get go. Our POV characters are varied, […]

Time keeps on slipping into the future

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

July 20, 2025 by NatalieH 2 Comments

CBR Bingo: Migrant (this book features the last of the human race fleeing a dying earth and travelling in stasis to find a habitable planet). This one is actually a re-read for me. I first read Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky back at the beginning of 2020 and loved it. I did intend to read the next book in the series (Children of Ruin), but for whatever reason, never ended up getting around to it. By the time I did get around to it, I’d […]

Hic sunt dracones

The Keeper's Six by Kate Elliott

July 20, 2025 by NatalieH 7 Comments

CBR Bingo: Rec’d (this recommendation actually comes courtesy of Emmalita, when I asked for recommendations for more fantasy books with main characters that are older women). I’ve read a couple of Kate Elliott’s books before, but not very recently. Before picking up The Keeper’s Six, I’d sort of forgotten about her work. I remember enjoying her previous books, but nothing much actually about their contents. This is a pretty short novel, that follows Esther, a 60-ish-year-old. Early one morning, she receives a brief, fearful phone call […]

Quoth the raven, “This book quotes me far too much”

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

July 16, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Purple If you’d asked me six months ago if another Hunger Games prequel was necessary, I’d have said no. I read the original trilogy around the time that they came out and fully enjoyed them but haven’t re-read them since. I did watch the movie of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and had mixed feelings (the earlier timeline was interesting, but I didn’t really care for Snow as a protagonist) so didn’t end up reading the novel. But enough people whose opinions I […]

Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells

Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells

July 15, 2025 by Classic 7 Comments

How I have missed you, let me count the ways…. Seriously though, I got told to read “Fugitive Telemetry” first and then circle back to The Murderbot Diaries, #5 and then #7. FYI, Wells has a new book or a novella coming out in 2026 called “Platform Decay.” We have Murderbot still protecting humans. This is set before “Network Effect”. Murderbot is stationed at Preservation Station and then discovers a dead body. Murderbot knows what to do in this situation, but also they know that […]
