Their Eyes Were Watching God

March 4, 2014 by BrittaneyNichole Leave a Comment

Their Eyes Were Watching God is an amazing book!  I think it’s one that everyone should read.  I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading it; I had to read this book for a class.  This book goes through the four stages of Janie Crawford’s life.  Janie is the narrator telling her story to her friend Pheoby after she finally comes back to Eatonville after running away with a younger man. Janie starts her story during her teen years living with her Grandmother, […]

NOT Another Historical Romance. I’m Joking, Of Course. It’s Three Historical Romances.

Who else loves to see an autocratic hero brought down a peg? My newfound delight in Juliana Gray continues with the historical romance trilogy Affairs by Moonlight which includes A Lady Never Lies, A Gentleman Never Tells, and A Duke Never Yields. If you read them in order, you have two books to wait before the aforementioned peg lowering and they are a really enjoyable ride. The Set Up: It’s 1890. Three aristocratic/aristocrat adjacent English men rent a villa in Tuscany to escape Society, explore […]

Disappointed Again

March 1, 2014 by Rachie3879 Leave a Comment

Daisy Goodwin’s American Heiress is the story of young Cora Cash, the wealthiest socialite in all of Newport just itching to escape the endless parade of social-climbing antics of her overbearing mother. As was common of wealthy Americans in the late 19th century, Cora’s parents move to England in order to secure their wealthy daughter the only thing that has escaped them: an English title, and therefore, respectability. It is there during a foxhunt with friends on a neighboring estate that Cora happens upon Ivo, […]

Also, he’s totally a closeted lush.

This was adorable, and surprisingly insightful. Of course, I’m always susceptible to books that feature socially challenged individuals, especially ones that are male, so there was probably no way I wasn’t going to like this book. I’m glad to say that not only did I like it, I very very much liked it, and I can’t wait to see the movie version (also written by Simsion — actually, I believe the script came first, and then he wrote the novel). A lot of people have […]

Another Historical Romance, But a Twofer with Displaced Princesses

February 27, 2014 by Mrs. Julien Leave a Comment

New author! Juliana Gray is a very strong historical romance writer with a wonderful turn of phrase, a gift for simile, and great smolder. It is such an unexpected pleasure when a book randomly selected from the romance spinner at one’s library results in a new novelist to enjoy. I went back the next day, and the next, to get more of her books. Gray will be going on my woefully short good authors list and may well end up as an autobuy. The Princesses […]

Mad about Milan

February 26, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

Historicals aren’t my go-to romance genre of choice, but I sure am drawn to the silk Courtney Milan is spinning. Unlocked is a novella in the Turner series (aka the BEST series) and it’s only tangentially related because some character is casually acquainted with one of the Turners, but no matter. It’s a great little I-hate-you-but-I-love-you story that transcends its somewhat cliched underpinnings due to the strength of Milan’s writing. Plot-wise, it’s very simple: Lady Elaine was the subject of some pretty harsh Regency-era bullying (“Your […]
