Claire and Jamie, Part Dhà

August 28, 2014 by Sophia 9 Comments

I couldn’t wait very long before my curiosity got the better of me and I went hunting for Dragonfly in Amber (1993) by Diana Gabaldon–the second in the Outlander series. This is the continuing story of Claire, the WWII nurse, dragged through time to the 1740’s and her adventures with Jamie Fraser, her sexy Highlander husband. This book follows the events leading up to the Jacobite rebellion in 1745, ending with the battle at Culloden. Jamie and Claire travel first to Paris before heading home […]

If you can ignore the plot, it’s pretty good

August 28, 2014 by Sophia 2 Comments

I usually only double up my romances when the first one has disappointed me. Between the Devil and Ian Eversea left me surprisingly dismayed, considering how much I usually enjoy Julie Anne Long’s books. So I decided to give her another try with Since the Surrender (2009). If I could take how I felt about the beginning of this one with how I felt about the end of Between the Devil and Ian Eversea, I’d have a fully satisfying romance novel. Unfortunately, this one had […]

Mean Girl meets Bad Boy

August 28, 2014 by Sophia 3 Comments

I was going to read Between the Devil and Ian Eversea (2014) by Julie Anne Long as soon as it came out, but my library purchased an ebook and not the Kindle version. After much waiting, I got the message to check it out, and I realized I couldn’t read it. I was disappointed, but there are a lot of other books out there, and I was soon distracted. It was only recently that I finally decided to suck it up and borrow the paper […]

Another Historical Romance, But with Social Anxiety

August 25, 2014 by Mrs. Julien 9 Comments

Short version: “I need to finish this book so I can stop reading it.” Long Version: When a Duke Says I Do is a historical romance with a lot going on, some of it interesting, but that gets lost in the details. The best way to explain is to summarize the plot and that will involve SPOILERS: 1. Elsie is 20 and has been engaged to the heir of the Duke of Stanhope (villain alert) her entire life. 2. Elsie cannot sleep in her bed […]

Amusing, but not the Moore I’d recommend for first-time readers

August 24, 2014 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

I’m kind of all over the place in the world of Christopher Moore. He’s published fourteen novels to date, and as of a month ago I had read twelve of them. But for some reason I’m just now getting to Coyote Blue, Moore’s second published novel. Coyote Blue tells the story of Sam Hunter, a confident insurance salesman in California who, on the surface, has everything he could want. He’s a successful salesman precisely because he is able to adapt his persona to whatever would […]

A contemporary romance with a quarterback and a girl in a beaver suit

August 24, 2014 by Malin 1 Comment

Dean Robillard seemingly has it all. He’s one of the top quarterbacks of the NFL, a profitable modelling contract for men’s underwear, good looks, scores of admirers, good friends – yet something is missing. He’s driving cross country to the ranch he bought on a whim, when he spots an angry young woman in a beaver costume on the side of the road. Curious and entertained, he gives her a ride, and quickly discovers that Blue Bailey has quite the temper on her. She’s also […]
