Good news, everyone! I think I’m psychic now! #BookExchange

December 13, 2014 by narfna 14 Comments

UPDATED 12/13/14 — see note below A couple of weeks ago, I splurged and ordered a David Bowie Pizza John t-shirt from DFTBA.com in honor of Pizzamas (raise your hands if you actually understood the contents of that sentence), so when I checked my mail this afternoon (after getting to leave work three hours early–wooo!), and there was a key in there indicating I had a package, my first thought was YAY PIZZA JOHN. And then I got confused, because it was from Amazon, and I […]

Sexy Spies + Overwrought Plot = Not-so Sexy Spies

December 5, 2014 by Alexis 6 Comments

I’m a bit of a self-loathing historical romance reader. Some (Flowers From the Storm, The Grand Sophy, Outlander, Lord of Scoundrels) are really great but the vast majority can best be described as disappointing. In fact if you use Mrs. Julien’s infamous tally (and really, why wouldn’t you) as a guidepost, a meager 10 out of 75 historical romance novels read in 2014 warrant her coveted recommendation. Many of the characters and plotlines are relatively homogeneous because there are only so many variants of “wealthy […]

A historical romance with deep secrets and surprise revelations

December 3, 2014 by Malin 3 Comments

4.5 stars Spoiler warning! It is actually IMPOSSIBLE for me to write about this book without spoiling some pretty major developments that involve all three former Rules for Scoundrels books. If you haven’t already read No Good Duke Goes Unpunished, PLEASE stay away from this review and return once you’re caught up. You’ll enjoy this book so much more if you heed my advice. The previous three books in the Rules for Scoundrels series told the story of the disgraced noblemen who opened The Fallen Angel, an exclusive […]

Holiday Love Stories to Make Feel You Warm and Fuzzy

December 3, 2014 by ModernLove Leave a Comment

I love Stephanie Perkins. Seriously, in my eyes she can do no wrong. In fact (spoiler alert), one of you may be getting a book by her for Christmas this year. Ahem. When I first read that she was editing a collection of romantic holiday-themed short stories, I was thrilled. And then I read the author list and pretty much camped out at the bookstore waiting for it to show up. And you know what? I wasn’t disappointed. These twelve stories all center around relationships […]

Another Historical Romance, But With a Recommendation

December 1, 2014 by Mrs. Julien 6 Comments

Historical or otherwise, there are two character types each for men and women in romance novels and seven plots. The reader knows the heroine always wins the right to determine her own fate and seek her own happiness. What varies is the quality and inventiveness of the writing. Ridiculous by D.L. Carter is a keeper. By turns funny and charming, it delivers a wonderful piece of escapist entertainment. Use this Amazon link to buy the novel. Now some words to describe this book and Carter’s […]

Come for the Historical Romance, Stay for the Hostility

Once More, My Darling Rogue by Lorraine Heath

November 30, 2014 by Mrs. Julien 5 Comments

Short Version: NO! Medium Version: My romance spirit guide, Malin, gave me this book and guessed the result based on the blurb. It’s a Victorian romance this –  plus a Victorian romance that –  resulting in a Victorian romance reading experience of: Long Version: While continuing to be an author I try to avoid actually paying for, Lorraine Heath is solidly B-Minus List writer with some decent books under her belt. She can be dated in her plotting and characters and Once More, My Darling Rogue is no […]
