Regency Soldiers Back from Fighting Napoleon? It’s the Romance Version of Peanut Butter and Chocolate!

The Survivor's Club: The Arrangement and The Escape by Mary Balogh

December 22, 2014 by Mrs. Julien 4 Comments

My theory that there are more soldiers in Regency romances with PTSD than served in the Napoleonic Wars continues to hold water. Mary Balogh has been publishing romances since the year I was eligible to vote. Not surprisingly, she is a consistent writer of good quality. I have only read about six of her books, but I believe that the final book of her Slightly Series, Slightly Dangerous, is a classic. She likely has at least one more and as I wait for new books […]

Spies in Love

December 20, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

A Spy to Die For is the second book in the Assassins Guild series. Instead of a sequel, Kris DeLake cleverly decides to push two minor characters from the first book to the forefront in the same timeline. It’s more a take two on the events of the first book,  Assassins in Love. The set up is the same, two strangers working for rival organizations are thrust together by chance. Jack Hunter works for the Rovers, a group of rogue mercenaries who refuse to join the Guild. Skye […]

Anarchy & Death: A Love Story

December 20, 2014 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

The Darkest Kiss is a love story between two immortals in modern times. Anya is the (minor) goddess of Anarchy, who loves lollipops, flirting and causing trouble which can sometimes end up in countries going to war. She is on the run from the other gods using her power of teleportation to wander about the earth. She soon becomes obsessed with Lucien, an ancient warrior who is cursed by the Lord of the Underworld. He basically is a grim reaper forced to usher souls to the other side. If he refuses, he actually falls […]

Carnival of Fools

December 20, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

This is another VF read from earlier in the year, same month as Undead and Unwed. Hence reading two vamp romances at the same time. In similar fashion, the characters seem to have questionable intelligence. However, at least this one had two enjoyable enough mysteries intertwined with the romance. A Girl’s Guide to Vampires is the first entry in the Dark Ones series by Ms. MacAlister. Joy and her friend Roxy end up in eastern europe working a book fair (Can I haz your job, please!). They decided to […]

A bratty vampire more concerned with about her shoe collection than being undead

December 19, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I like reading about vampires probably more than most, Twilight notwithstanding, but this series really tested my patience with its obnoxious protagonist Betsey. She is having the worst day at the start of this book. She loses her job, gets into a wreck and wakes up alive in the funeral home. The first thing she notices is that she’s wearing a tacky suit and bad shoes. Not at all like her closet of designer things. She doesn’t really freak out, but instead goes home as […]

Reading a CBR Favorite for the first time

December 19, 2014 by bonnie 1 Comment

As you all know by now, emmalita was my book Santa this year. Here’s how awesome she is: she loaned me this ebook, to see if I’d like it. Courtney Milan is a popular writer around the Cannonball Read. I’m not a reader of romance, so I don’t keep up with the genre. But I noticed that people around here LOVE Milan. With a fervent, vocal ardor. So, in my CBR Book Exchange Wish List, I mentioned that I would be willing to give her […]
