I love humorous, breezy chick lit. Books of implausibly normal girls with normal bodies falling love with improbably wonderful guys. I did not love this book. In fact, I pretty much LOATHED this book. The protagonist is a 26 year old kindergarten teacher named Moxie. She is a size 16, and while she is quite comfortable with her size, it has always been an issue with her cartoonishly manipulative step-mother. The book opens with Moxie having sex with a guy she doesn’t like after a […]
Starting a New Cannonball Read with Another Historical Romance. Watch Dr. Strangelove First.
I am going to review Grace Burrows’ historical romance Douglas: Lord of Heartache by posting spoilers and complaints. One of them is informative, yet icky. You have been warned. What is with Grace Burrows and precious bodily fluids? She’s not the only one who mentions them, but she is the only one whom I ever read that actually uses the term “mop up”. Is it for verisimilitude? Is it just her thing? It’s not that she discusses them more than others, but there’s an extra layer […]
I don’t think I have ever read a really good YA sci-fi book. Do they even exist?
Ugh. I hate being disappointed in books. This one almost totally missed the mark for me. It was aggressively okay, and the coolest bits I’ve seen done better elsewhere. I knew going in this might be an off book for me, but if anything I anticipated it being more like the last book was: a fun sci-fi romance romp about starcrossed lovers in an alien environment. Well, actually, turns out that was exactly what I got, because everything about this book is echoed from the […]
Starting the year reading a lot of romance!
To start off 2015 reading right I started with my favorite genre! Also I spent the first two weeks of the year traveling for work so I needed something light and delicious (and lightweight, go library kindle downloads!) After doing abysmally actually writing up my reviews last year (I read 67 books, but only wrote ~11 reviews. Terrible.) One of this years resolutions is to get my bum in gear. And I’m only 6 books behind! Anyways… A Week to be Wicked by Tessa Dare, […]
“Perfect” in a title raises my expectations
This book is a mystery romance where a couple are thrown together through contrivance, running from bad guys, chasing the past actions of a con man to prove our heroine’s innocence from a murder charge. It sounds good. It’s only.. ok. It’s engrossing enough while you’re reading it, but utterly forgettable and unrealistic. I will acknowledge I have issues. It’s not the greatest plan to read a book which bills itself as a beach read in the depths of winter. It contains adventure, romance, and a […]
Crazy Rich Asians AKA Kevin Kwan was eavesdropping on my childhood
My decision to read Crazy Rich Asians wasn’t an accidental one. I had just returned from a family wedding in Singapore, and being around so many of my relatives — some of whom I haven’t seen in more than 15 years — aroused such a bizarre sense of nostalgia. Part of it is comforting, like seeing the faces and personalities of my aunts and uncles (all of whom are physical variations of my mother); part of that nostalgia came with relief. It reminded me of how exhausting […]
