Satisfying Impulse Buy

April 8, 2015 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Sometimes my Nook is a dangerous thing. Heading into this year’s Cannonball Read I had a game plan. I went through my Goodreads to read list, picked the books from the past few cannonballs that I hadn’t gotten around to and really wanted to read. I also looked for books in my to be read that would work for various challenges on Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge, and made a big list for myself. I then went to my lovely library’s online catalogue and put […]

My Mother Said I Never Should

April 8, 2015 by Lizbth 6 Comments

I have given up thinking about reviewing the other two books in the Bishop series, because I think they might end up increasingly hysterical rants and no-one seems to agree with me, and I am moving on the the excellent and reliable Holly Black again.   Hazel and Ben live in Fairfold, a small tourist-trap town with a bunch of fairies living in the forest nearby. Once, they were as close as two siblings could be, but their relationship has fractured over the years as […]

Nostalgia for Bridget Jones

April 7, 2015 by Caitlin_D 6 Comments

Oh Bridget… I felt obligated to read Mad About the Boy from a completionist standpoint. I read the first two novels and saw the movies, it only seemed logical to read the long awaited (was it?) sequel (cash grab) *Eighteen month old spoiler* * * * * Ok, so Mad About the Boy opens with Bridget in a new dating dilemma over her first boyfriend since the perfect Mark Darcy’s death. I get that Fielding had to kill Mark because no would be sympathetic to […]

No Alex and Still Not Olivia’s Book, But a Pleasant Historical Romance

April 7, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 7 Comments

Having just finished a book in which the main characters were rarely in the same country, it was a pleasant change to read a book in which the hero and heroine are almost always in the same room, and by one of my favourite authors as well. Julie Anne Long’s new, potentially penultimate, Pennyroyal Green novel, It Started with a Scandal, includes small visits from previous stories’ characters and the return of one of her most charming men, the displaced French aristocrat and raffish rogue […]

Eleanor & Park, Finally.

April 6, 2015 by Rachie3879 6 Comments

*Disclaimer: This review is being written as I watch the NCAA men’s basketball championship game. I apologize in advance if this is written more poorly than usual. I first heard about Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park here on CBR. The rave reviews it received from many folks forced me to add it to the list and I’ve finally gotten around to reading it. What is hard for me now, having finished it, is figuring out how I feel about it. In case you’ve not paid […]

Curiosity quelled; expectations exceeded

April 6, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

I’ve heard vague murmurs from various corners that Courtney Milan’s Carhart series, being Courtney Milan, is very good; however, being early Courtney Milan, they aren’t as good as the classics she later produced. That’s possibly true, but the two novels and novella that comprise the series do have a rough charm to them that actually really worked for me, and furthermore, I daresay that they’re a bit more brazen than her later works as well. Let’s get into it! This Wicked Gift (3 stars) is a prequel novella […]
