Meh.

April 10, 2015 by narfna 7 Comments

This was okay. Not a bad way to spend an hour, but I think I wanted a different story than it ended up giving me. I just never connected with the characters after I realized it was going to be a different story than I thought it would be after reading the first three pages. Here’s how it starts. Violet is a wallflower at a ball on Christmas Eve, when in comes a seriously injured man fresh from being shipwrecked or something. He’s speaking some […]

A romance with a healthy dose of religion

April 10, 2015 by Beth Ellen 3 Comments

This is the 7th Pennyroyal Green book. I have been reading them out of order, and while it sometimes confuses a little, as you hit the books with the key over-arcing plot points you get to go, “Oh! That’s why she started doing that!” I’m looking at you Olivia… But this story is an Eversea one with the vicar Adam Sylvaine and former courtesan, Evie Duggan. Yes, the do have the simplest of names for a religious based romance ever. It felt a little Tessa […]

Other People’s Secrets

Telling the story backwards makes it like archeology.  Here is the top layer, when everything has settled and the midden of their past is swept into corners and unused hallways.  The next layer down, the broken pottery and dried up citrus rinds re-coalesce into vases and urns and limes and oranges.  Things are used for the proper purpose, their meanings clear.  Below that, the beginning, the kiln, the seed. A Romance Because Mrs. Julien and Malin are Kind Beyond Measure (no, that’s not the plot)

April 9, 2015 by Emmalita 7 Comments

I started reading romances in college, many many years ago. It was kind of lonely because no one really talked about them. There was the danger of being judged, and I still cared about such things. I read romances all through law school and all through my decade in a traditional office based career, and through my years in non-traditional, non-career working and then about 6 years ago, I mostly stopped. I would occasionally read an Eloisa James or Julia Quinn, but the Jayne Anne […]

Sticky, sweet, all-consuming fluff.

April 9, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 6 Comments

Tessa Dare is just a gem. I was very slightly underwhelmed by her Stud Club series, having preferred the more recent books of hers that I’ve read, but here I am back at her first novel, and I feel like it’s a perfect representation of what readers should expect from her current oeuvre. Goddess of the Hunt has several delicious — if implausible — romantic encounters, a tomboy heroine, an Unfortunate Misunderstanding, and a really entertaining side plot that sets up the next book in the most […]

Stranded in this spooky town with Katie and Patty

April 8, 2015 by katie71483 14 Comments

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vb6xxeE_2ik&w=560&h=315]   Gentle reader, have you seen the pigs flying? That’s right, The End is upon us. To celebrate that dogs and cats are living together in mass hysteria, Patty (a.k.a. *Name Redacted*) and I have decided to review a book together. We’ve chosen J.R. Ward’s Dark Lover since it’s a guilty pleasure we both adore.   Patty: And it’s totally not because we’re codependent or have some kind of blood bond or anything like that. Swear.   Katie: First off, let me just […]
