Love the Setup, But the Rest… Not So Much

March 12, 2018 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

Upon reading the premise of this novel, I was immediately drawn in: it’s like someone rooted around in my brain and picked out the exact kind of story I wanted to write. But the actual writing and way things played out, I can’t say that I enjoyed. All the ingredients are there to make a compelling read, but ultimately didn’t come together quite so easily. To be fair, the timeline of the book spans quite a number of decades, but perhaps addressing all that time […]

Liked it better the first time I read it

March 7, 2018 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars I read this book for the first time back in October 2012. My review from back then can be found here. Back then, I rated the book 4 stars and from my write-up, I really appeared to enjoy it. The first Cannonball Read Book Club of the year was a discussion of this book, since the star-studded movie version, directed by Ava DuVernay will be in cinemas any day now. From the trailers and promotional material, the movie looks like it’s going to be visually stunning, […]

A Tsunami of Oratory

January 21, 2018 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Sometimes it pays to remember the good ideas cannonballers and friends have so you can steal them outright to suit your purposes. You all should go back and read denesteak’s brilliant review from last January, she unpacks the world through her powerful viewpoint and it is more than worth your time. When I had a few hours to myself on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day here in the States I remembered Dene’s review and the fact that I’m supposed to be finding a single sitting […]

I completely adored Aslan’s last book, Zealot, which examined the historical evidence we have for what Jesus of Nazareth, the historical Jesus, would have been like when you strip away all the modern beliefs and assumptions. It was incredibly fascinating and Aslan took us through the evidence piece by piece, drawing conclusions or best guesses along the way. Although I enjoyed God, it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting. I was expecting the same measured look at historical evidence and then conclusions drawn from that […]

Adventist Authority Wars

December 31, 2017 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

The Seventh-day Adventist is one of the lesser known Protestant denominations even though it has the second largest pre-k to university parochial school system second only to the Catholics. In 2015 there was a vote at the General Conference of the denomination. The vote was to grant women pastors ordination which, according to denomination policy, is necessary to move in administrative positions in the church. Sadly, the denomination was split between conferences from Western developed nations and developing nations of South America, Asia, and Africa. […]

Epic: The Story God Is Telling and the Role That Is Yours to Play

December 31, 2017 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

“Epic” by John Eldridge is an abstract sized version of his full length novel, “Waking the Dead.” What makes “Epic” unique is that he’s arranged the book into four acts. Each act takes a part of the hero journey and related the spiritual lessons to many of the famous heroes in literature: Frodo, Maximus, Neo, and others. While I liked the fleshed out version of Eldridge’s view on God’s involvement in our heroic journeys, this condensed version was a good refresher but the four acts […]
