I adore a young adult novel that is well written, well thought out and makes me think – Burned did all of that and more. This novel is written in free verse which, at first, can feel daunting, but is a refreshing way to have a story told. Communicated in first person we really get inside the protagonists head, we understand her motivations on an intimate level, we relate to her drive and her desperation. Pattyn’s story is not lost in verse, if anything it […]
Well, I guess the red capes had to come from somewhere
Genesis Part VII - Chapters 26-30 by 6000 years of male privelege
Previously on Supernatural… Sarah’s death, Abraham’s death, Isaac’s marriage to Rebekah: the best little camel waterer in Texas, and sibling rivalry, as per the usual. In this installment… Patty: There was a severe famine so Isaac hightailed it to Gerar. God told him to stay put and not to go to Egypt and that if he obeyed, he would be rewarded with God’s standard offer of blessings and descendants. Now, stop me if you’ve heard this one but Isaac tells everyone in town that Rebekah […]
An OK read but I recommend checking out Bobby Dollar instead
With cigarette smoke rising from under a fedora, the murky cityscape in the background, and the scarlet feathered wings, The cover of Something More than Night screams angelic noir mystery. From 2012 to 2014 I read Tad William’s excellent Bobby Dollar trilogy that kicks off with The Dirty Streets of Heaven. Bobby Dollar is the nickname of the angel Doloriel and the series is a mash up of noir mystery, urban fantasy, and angels. Something More than Night came out in 2013, the same year as the second Bobby Dollar […]
Heaven on Earth in Iowa
I’ve read several books on cults like polygamy and Scientology so Greetings from Utopia Park was right up my alley. Claire Hoffman’s mother found Transcendental Meditation and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as a college student and introduce Claire & her brother, Stacey, to the practice as toddlers. Like most cults TM uses a lot of pseudoscience to trick people into becoming loyal devotees before draining them of all their money in an effort to get more enlightened. I never knew Maharishi. Despite the fact that he lived at the […]
Bigotry and fundamentalism make for a bad mix
I’m on the books as being a fan of Jon Krakauer, so as someone who is not very familiar with Mormonism beyond that South Park Episode, I was beyond curious to read his take on the history of Mormonism and the ways that certain ingrained aspects of the faith can somewhat naturally progress into the type of extremism that causes two brothers to brutally murder their sister in-law and her child because they believed they were following God’s orders. In general, one of the ways […]
I was so much older then/I’m younger than that now
As you might guess from some of my other posts, I am enough of an Internet Old that this was a re-read for me. I thought it held up beautifully.
