No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross

July 23, 2018 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

As you might imagine, this memoir is not a fun one to work through, but that fact doesn’t mean it is not a good or doesn’t have significance. I was drawn to reading it after just finishing a YA novel focused on sexuality in a majority Mormon community, only to see that the trailer for the film adaptation for Boy Erased just dropped. And watching it was a lot to handle at a moment where I was already emotionally compromised, but I figured it would […]

28: An interesting, if inaccessible, book on liberation theology

June 10, 2018 by bonnie Leave a Comment

A decided for her book club pick that we’d be reading theology, and she wanted to focus on social justice issues. James H. Cone’s The Cross and the Lynching Tree was in her TBR, and she wanted to augment our discussion from social justice and activism issues. I’m not sure this is the most accessible book for public consumption, though there were parts that were compelling and enjoyable. As an academic, it was fun to read from a discipline outside mine, especially since Dr. Cone […]

The Glory of my Favorite Illustrator

May 30, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The end of March 2018 saw a reissue of a Tomie dePaola classic Big Anthony and the Magic Ring (now called Strega Nona’s Magic Ring). The beginning of March saw a reissue of The Clown of God (last night was the first time I could read without crying my eyes out). And early April saw a rare site: dePaola’s text and illustrations by Doug Salati with, In a Small Kingdom. It is a miracle I can tear myself away from reading them! (Yes, my friends, […]

You can’t go home again

May 28, 2018 by Dusty Highway 1 Comment

I still remember watching E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in the theater as a kid. The nearest movie theater was an hour’s drive from our little town in the Deep Midwest, so we didn’t get to go more than a few times a year. I’d been begging my parents to take us to see E.T. for weeks when they finally surprised me for my 8th birthday. I was enchanted from the start, so wrapped up in the story by the time Eliot said goodbye to E.T. that […]

A Precious Little Spiritual Comic

May 24, 2018 by Halbs 2 Comments

I’m a big fan of Goodreads and I also love reserving books at my local library. It’s fun to figure out new books to read and plan ahead. That being said, I think there’s also a lot of joy to be found in just browsing the stacks. Sometimes you’ll stumble across a cover that raises your eyebrows or a title that you remember a friend of a friend mention at some party years ago. It’s fun to find those kinds of books and I think […]

Mommy’s Khimar is Lovely

May 3, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A young American-Muslim girl tells about her mother’s colorful khimars (or headscarf). She plays dress up in them (she is a princess, a mamma bird) and her mother shows her how to properly wear it as well. The girl talks about all the things she does. Just like any other child. She talks about a grandmother who does not go to the mosque, but is loved and is a member of her family. And she talks about her extended family in the mosque. She talks […]
