What can I say about Between the Bridge and the River that has not been said before?

November 27, 2018 by BlackRaven 7 Comments

And with a close of this book I made the last Bingo book before the deadline! #cbr10bingo is now complete! What can I say about Between the Bridge and the River that has not been said before? I purposely did not read anything about this book before reading it. Sadly, now I wish I had found this book before the book club discussion. I would have a few things to say. Therefore, I am just going to give my impression of the book (as we probably […]

If anyone tries the recipe at the end, I would love to know how it comes out!

Little Red Ruthie: A Hanukkah Tale by Gloria Koster and illustrated by Sue Eastland was a book I reviewed awhile back for my stores newsletter. I picked it up again to see if it was still the fun Little Red Riding Hood story with a Hanukkah twist. And it is still that fun Little Red Riding Hood story with a Hanukkah twist, turn and lots and lots of sour cream and applesauce to go along with the yummy latkes. Ruthie is going to Grandmothers house […]

#CBR Bingo: #Cannonbookclub (Bingo #5)

November 17, 2018 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR10Bingo: #CannonBookclub I voted for this book in the most recent Book Club poll because Craig Ferguson’s autobiography is hugely enjoyable and one of the best ones I’ve read/listened to (I have the audiobook, narrated by Ferguson himself), and as a result, I was curious and excited at the chance to read a work of fiction by him. Unlike some who have already reviewed this book (by now quite a few, I’m yet again behind on my reviews), I didn’t really watch a lot of Ferguson’s stuff as a […]

Holy Case Crime

November 3, 2018 by Jake Leave a Comment

First things first: I got a free advance copy of the re-release of this novel thanks to the good folks over at Hard Case Crime! I collect HCC books as a hobby and am on their mailing list. I won a contest for a free copy of this one. They are awesome and know how to reward loyal customers. Much love to Charles Ardai and all the good folks over there. Donald Westlake is the kind of writer I would love to be, someone who’s […]

Come for the Misogyny, Stay for the Anti-Semitism

November 1, 2018 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

So…I didn’t like this book, at all. I stuck with it because it is the center square of Cannonball Read Bingo. But Craig Ferguson’s Between the Bridge and the River isn’t good. Two times the author refers to the two main characters with the statement “He had become interesting.” That is not correct. Neither of the two main characters is interesting, ever. One character, Fraser, is a preacher on a late night religious program whose career ends in disgrace when he is accused of sexually […]

“Our purpose is to present the most humane, most spiritual, most moral, most communal model of life for a world in chaos around us.”

October 25, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

If you like the quote in the title of this review, you’ll like this book. The words spoken by Sister Joan Chittister contain the kind of wisdom you’ll find throughout this short and mind-blowing book. While How to Live draws much of its wisdom from The Rule of St. Benedict and the monks and nuns who follow his Rule, the book is useful for anyone looking to lead a balanced life of service, rest, gratitude, and community. My only complaint about this book is that I […]
