Two Words, whole lot of meaning

Hands Up! by Breanna J. McDaniel

July 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Hands Up!  is one of those books I wish I did not have to rate. It is every rating and it is no rating. There are parts to love, dislike, learn from and wonder at. The phrase “your mileage may vary” or course, comes to mind. Breanna J. McDaniel and Shane Evans created a book that everyone will relate to this book on their own level. Their own likes, dislikes, experiences and preconceived notions will come into play and that will decide your level of […]

The First Time that Willie Nelson Steered Me Wrong (Maybe)

The Mystery Religions and Christianity by Samuel Angus

April 30, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

A few years ago I read Willie Nelson’s It’s a Long Story: My Life. Of course, the background of his music and influences is great. Additionally, I was very interested in my fellow Texan’s take on growing up in a Texas church and on religion in general. In that books he says: I’ve never doubted the genius of Christ’s moral message or the truth of the miracles he performed. I see his presence on earth and resurrection as perfect man as a moment that altered human […]

When you’re dead sober and the penguin, cat and ghost-grasshopper are talking to you

Entropy by Aaron Costain

April 29, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you liked Entropy by Aaron Costain , this review is not for you. Entropy is the kind of book you want to read, probably should read, but when you do read, you have NO idea what is going on. Yet, since you want to be “part of the cool crowd” you will say how wonderful and marvelous it is. I am not ashamed to say, “I do not get it.” Actually, let me backtrack, I understand the different creation myths are being spoken about […]

What would Jesus do?

Good News Bible (New Testament) by God/ Anonymous

April 16, 2019 by Wanderlustful 3 Comments

This is my companion review to my earlier review of the Old Testament, and, as I was reminded by the Cannonball overlords, a timely read given that Easter is coming up this weekend (happy end of Lent to the righteous, happy long weekend to the rest of us heathens!). As a basic overview for those who have been putting off their Bible studies, the New Testament (or at least the Good News Bible version) is roughly 330 pages which are divided into 27 chapters, or […]

The original Book

The Good News Bible by God/ Anonymous

April 2, 2019 by Wanderlustful 3 Comments

It feels very wrong to write a book review of The Bible, but it would also feel wrong to not get the Cannonball Reads credit for reading it- so here we are!  I’m splitting this review into two, one review for the Old Testament and one review for the New Testament- not only does this make sense thematically, but this way I also get double the book reading credit!  Although my hesitations in writing this review are also many, I’m also hopeful that God, if […]

Beautiful writing, a little too much religion

Gilead by Marilynne Robinson

March 10, 2019 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I haven’t given up on my list of 50 Books Every Woman Should Read Before She Turns 40, although I’ve come close in the past couple of weeks. The latest book I picked up was the Pulitzer Prize-winning, Gilead (2004) by Marilynne Robinson. This was a relatively short novel about an old Congregationalist minister, John Ames, near the end of his life. It primarily focuses on Ames’s perspective of life, as well as relationships between fathers and sons. It’s obviously thoughtful and well written, which I appreciated. Some […]
