Weep For What Is Lost Forever

The Darkening Age: The Christian Destruction of the Classical World by Catherine Nixey

August 28, 2019 by blauracke 1 Comment

What is a triumph? As the Romans understood the word, a triumph was not just a victory, but an annihilation, and this is exactly what happened to a lot of the Classical World when Christianity took over. Statues, temples, books, religious sites, philosophy, science, everything had to be destroyed and/or desecrated in the name of the new god. Catherine Nixey tells the story of the rise of Christianity and the devastation it left in its path. I was sure that this book would make me […]

Praise the Lord

The Churchgoer by Patrick Coleman

August 24, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

It’s clear that Patrick Coleman has an axe to grind against evangelical culture. He uses The Churchgoer as an outlet to do so. I’m a Christian and while I’ve always been a mainline Protestant one (translation: a tad more open-minded than many), I’m quite familiar with the evangelical culture Coleman is skewering here. Many of his references and stories brought back flashbacks to my own life. Attendance numbers have steadily declined in these churches for the last decade (reflective of a decline in church attendance amongst all […]

When Far Away is as close as your backyard

If They Come for Us by Fatimah Asghar

July 24, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr11bingo #FarAndAway I am not a woman of the Islamic faith. I did not grow up an orphan. I did not look different from people around me due to my skin color. I do know what it is like to be a woman in our society (and a plus sized one) but I cannot imagine the ethnic cleansing/genocide of over 14 million people during the India/Pakistan Partition and 75,000 to 100.000 of them were women. Yes, I grew up poor. Yes, I know what the […]

How to create beauty from chaos.

A Beautiful Mess by Danielle Strickland

July 13, 2019 by kella Leave a Comment

Danielle Strickland is a speaker that I have had the privilege to hear several times, and even learn from directly at a conference she taught at. I’m a huge fan of her as a person, and of the work that she does. She’s passionate about empowering women to lead (especially in the church, where sadly, the patriarchy is still often calling the shots) and she’s passionate about justice (working with girls at risk of falling into human trafficking). She’s real and genuine and is someone […]

Great read, unless you’ve heard her speak live.

SelfLess by Megan Marshman

July 12, 2019 by kella Leave a Comment

I picked up this little book after hearing Marshman speak at a conference I was attending. She is an engaging speaker, and was the reason I wanted to attend the conference to begin with. She’s dynamic and hilarious and insightful and real. Just enough sarcasm to be relatable, and full of hilarious anecdotes from her real life to drive home the points she’s making. So I was happy to pick up this book, looking for more of what she has to offer. The book itself […]

I want to be her best friend.

Of Mess and Moxie by Jen Hatmaker

July 12, 2019 by kella Leave a Comment

I’m a huge Jen Hatmaker fan. I’ve read most of her books, follow her on social media, and have heard her speak live. My goal in life is to be her friend in real life, and not because she’s a glamorous celebrity, but just the opposite. She is honest and real and seems like the type of person you wouldn’t have to clean your house fore before she came over to visit. I appreciate her laugh-out loud humour, her real-life insights, and also the way […]
