Holy Moly

Circe by Madeline Miller

March 3, 2021 by Dense 8 Comments

When (I read it): Late night treat-time only, when the pull of the book matched the pull of (spoiler warning) my bed. Where (I read it): In bed, where my cocoon allowed me to sink in without expectation or judgment. Why (I read it): A long-ignored predilection for mythology combined with a general crowd gaga-factor. How (I read it): With great anticipation, bought many months ago to read when I could appreciate it. Finally got there. In preface, I’m three books read by the first […]

A surprisingly earnest (and not surprisingly literal) exploration of the Bible.

The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs

March 1, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

Feels good to finally knock this off my TBR after 13 years, and it was a pretty good read, but I think I wanted more from it. This mindset is puzzling, because I was actually expecting less than what I got here. I was expecting this to be more of a satirical, humorous, critical exploration of the Bible. And it was not that! At all! Jacobs is extremely, beyond-call sincere in his exploration. He’s funny, but the humor is secondary. His quest comes first. (He […]

As the crow flies we are already there. As the human walks, it will take a little longer.

As the Crow Flies by Melanie Gillman

February 22, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As the Crow Flies was on several reading lists, award lists and being promoted for a while. I decided maybe I would investigate it after I noticed a couple schools had ordered it. When I noticed the price, I was “Um…okay, this is a library book.” However, it is worth the price of the book, if you decide it is after reading it from a library. You see, this graphic novel by Melanie Gillman is not … well it is a story that goes from […]

A Bat mitzvah to go please

Becoming Brianna by Terri Libenson

February 9, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Becoming Brianna is a fun story about becoming yourself and learning about your own beliefs, and what you want to do vs what you want to do for others. Terri Libenson has brought Brianna back for her own (mostly) solo story. The events of this book are taking place while the previous book is also happening. However, you are not seeing those events, they are just mentioned.  And while it would be a good idea to read the previous books, this graphic novel is a […]

When the Bully is the Hero, the Girl is in love with a God and there are spaceships up your nose.

Animal Crackers by Gene Luen Yang

January 28, 2021 by BlackRaven 12 Comments

Gene Luen Yang can write the instructions to how to make a sandwich and I would read it. That does not mean I will love it, but I will always appreciate it. And Animal Crackers is in that category. I was not jumping up and down about it, and even with a second reading (although a bit of a quick one) and being able to put together a few more pieces I missed the first time, I still did not love this graphic novel. This […]

A Bard, A Fae, A Wolf and a Crow walk into a bar and start a fight

Fantastic Tales of Nothing by Alejandra Green

January 28, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The back of this book, Fantastic Tales of Nothing by Alejandra Green, says if you like Amulet, Five Worlds and Estranged you will like this. And while I agree yes this is true, there are differences to the series you might want to look at: Amulet is light, like Fantastic, but Fantastic is a tad “meatier.” Five Worlds (or at least book one, which I read) might be closest, but again, Fantastic is meatier. However, Estranged is darker by a smidgen (not that it is […]
