A real upside-down holiday

Hanukkah Upside Down by Elissa Brent Weissman

April 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport  author  The cover of Hanukkah Upside Down was what first caught my eye. The character at the top is upside down. Or is the one on the bottom? After all, she (the top of page) is right side up on her side of things. But then again, the boy at the bottom thinks things are right on his side, too.  This clever book about two cousins in different countries (one New York, USA and the other in New Zealand) shows how “the better cousin” […]

The Other Ones by Jamesie Fournier

April 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport own I started Jamesie Fournier’s book, The Other Ones, a few times, and it finally stuck a few weeks ago. It took me that long to figure out what I wanted to say about it. I think that while this is a good book, it is not easy, and can be a bit slow at times. And the illustrations that Toma Feizo Gas created are nice, but they are not for everyone and can be a smidgen off putting if you are not in […]

Don’t read this book if you’re hungry

Challah Day by Charlotte Offsay

April 5, 2023 by BlackRaven 4 Comments

CBR15Passport New Author From kneading dough to gathering with family, we have a Challah Day. What is Challah? It is a bread for the Friday night Shabbat dinner. I did not know this, but learned about it, the culture of the family and the fun and love this family has in Charlotte Offsay’s story. Overall, this is a simple story of family and how they come together. It does not matter the holiday we celebrate; we all have these traditions and it Offsay shows us […]

“In mind, God; In the hand, work.”

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Sri Swami Satchidananda

April 5, 2023 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This book is on the suggested reading list of Yoga With Adriene’s Adriene Mischler. It’s the fourth book on the list that I’ve read. While this book is called The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, it does not include all of Patanjali’s yoga sutras. Instead, it contains select sutras, as well as commentary on most of the select sutras. Sri Swami Satchidananda provides the translation and commentary. Sutra literally means “thread”, but here its used more to mean yoga aphorisms.  And yoga here is not hatha […]

Wings Once Cursed and Bound by Piper J Drake

April 4, 2023 by Emmalita 4 Comments

I liked this a lot. Wings Once Cursed and Bound is an intriguing start to a paranormal romance series. It is getting marketed as “for fans of Sarah J Maas and Jennifer Armentrout,” which I think is setting up assumptions about the book that won’t hold up. It is a fantasy romance, but it’s set in an alternate universe Seattle, not a fantasy world. Peeraphan, called Punch by her friends, is at a dance rehearsal when she is offered a gorgeous pair of red shoes. She is […]

A Lot to Take In

The Heart of the Buddha’s Teachings: Transforming Suffering Into Peace, Joy and Liberation by Thich Nhat Hanh

April 1, 2023 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Those interested in learning more about Buddhism. In a nutshell: Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh shares an overview of some of the basic tenets of Buddhism. Worth quoting: I underlined and starred so, so much. Why I chose it: I’ve read some very basic writings on Buddhism many years ago; I’m not more interested in learning more to see if it is a spiritual path I’d like to learn more about. What it left me feeling: Calm. Review: I tend to think of […]
