Around the world in a book

Lunar New Year (Celebrations & Festivals) by Natasha Yim

Martina Has Too Many Tias by Emma Otheguy

The Masjid Kamal Loves by Ashley Franklin

Lali’s Flip-Flops by Farhana Zia

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was in the mood for picture books, and when I went looking for one, I found four. (I was surprised I only found four). And when I started to really look at them, I realized they were all culturally based.  And due to the shorter nature of them, it would be hard to write individual reviews, so here is a “Around the World ” in four books themed review. All are currently available and all are good reads and I will probably read the […]

When the spirits ask for help

Guardian of Fukushima (Junior Library Guild) by Fabien Grolleau

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo Asia/Oceania  set in Japan While I am giving Guardian of Fukushima (Junior Library Guild) a five, there are a few bumps that make this graphic novel 4.5 to a 4.7.  However, while this is not a perfect story, it is wonderfully done and is the story that was needed. The emotional and human aspects of the earthquake, the tsunami and nuclear devastation of March 2011 is explored in ways we do not usually see. Which tends to be, when a disaster happens, we usually find the […]

Be the grandfather

My Grandfather's Song by Phùng Nguyên Quang,

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo Guide: We must be the guides for the next generations to keep the conservation of our world happening. My Grandfather’s Song at first seemed like it was going in one direction, but it does a slight turn. The beginning seems more of how nature is wild and therefore for us to learn from, but the turn comes when the narrator shows us how everything is connected and respect is given to the wild. We see all this with how the narrator grows. You will […]

I think I need to give this a second chance

Taking to Water by Jennifer Conlon

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This book of poetry reads mostly like a prose fiction story, but not as prose poetry (there is a subtle difference). I am assuming that Taking to Water by Jennifer Conlon is fiction, however, as the protagonist of the book is a woman disliking themselves, their body, their gender and all that is associated with that, and I have not found anything that said Conlon went on that journey themselves (please let me know if I have interpreted this incorrectly). The themes of water (positive, […]

Faith and fun

Zain’s Super Friday by Henna Khan

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While Zain’s Super Friday is not my all time favorite book, it is up there for two reasons. The first is that it has at least two layers and the second is that it deals with representation in a positive manner.   Zain is a young boy who is ready to go-go-go! on Friday morning. However, his father must work, and when he is done, it is time for prayers. We are exposed to the Muslim culture in a positive way. There is no racism, just […]

Tzimmes for Tzipporah by Megan Hoyt

Just One Little Light by Kat Yeh

June 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It’s time for another picture book round up review. This time there are two books I enjoyed reading, but did not feel I could honestly do a full review of. Both stories are sweet, but are not necessarily for everyone.  Are you looking for a new book about getting out and about on the farm? Well Tzimmes for Tzipporah is a new book (or will be in September 2023) dealing with a farm during harvest time. It is written by Megan Hoyt and Christine Battuz […]
