A couple of treats

Sugar in Milk by Thrity Umrigar

The Night Before Eid: A Muslim Family Story by Aya Khalil

August 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As I mentioned in a previous review I like picture books about different cultures, and I have been reading a lot of reader copies online, even though both titles I am going to mention are available for physical copy-owning I might just get a physical copy of Sugar in Milk as Khoa Le’s illustrations are wild, fun colors, details, and expressive in all ways. They are supporters of the story and their own characters. This Thrity Umrigar tale is a delightful, thoughtful and relatable story […]

The light in these books

My Diwali Light by Raakhee Mirchandani

Raaga’s Song: A Diwali Story by Navina Chhabria

August 23, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like when picture books present other cultures or pieces of that culture in them. I think it is because of the introduction aspect. You can get your feet wet without all the nitty grittiness of things. And in a picture book roundup post (again, I’ve been busy with picture books being read online from my old saved links) here are two titles that are good for that introduction aspect and could make you and your child want to learn more.  My Diwali Light by […]

A father, a celebration, and special flowers

Finding Papa by Angela Pham Krans

Moon's Ramadan by Natasha Khan Kazi

Wallflowers by Mackenzie Joy

August 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Hey kids, what time is it? It’s picture book roundup time again as I have been terribly busy reading them. They range from family themes, personality themes and holiday themes. Each one has a sentimental feeling that allows a softer side to reading. In Finding Papa we learn about a mother and child as they escape Vietnam to travel to America to find the father who left earlier to set up a home for them. Based on not only the people who journeyed from Vietnam […]

Stuck or unstuck in time

Slaughterhouse-Five, or the Children's Crusade: The Graphic Novel by Kurt Vonnegut Jr and Ryan North

August 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

WTH did I read? I admit, a lot of the graphic novel Slaughterhouse-Five, or the Children’s Crusade, went over my head. But that just means I need to read it again as this is not something  that can be taken in all at once. The artwork is what really grabbed me this first reading. There was a lot going on, but it did not always feel “fleshed out” and there were things missing, yet, there was also too much going on as well. The lack […]

Flowing friendship

The Musician (Lofty Mountains and Flowing Water) by Xuefeng Liu

August 18, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Musician (Lofty Mountains and Flowing Water) by Xuefeng Liu, Gunter Grossholz (Illustrator) and Yuxi Wan (Illustrator) had a so-so story to it. It was a nice journey and an interesting folktale, myth or legend (depending on how you define those genres, and how you look at the story itself). However, it was the illustrations that grabbed me. That makes this book really more of a 4 than 5 for me, but the potential for other people and the fact it is, while familiar, it […]

The night parade is about to begin . . .

Tokyo Night Parade by J. P. Takahashi

August 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not really sure how I feel about the picture book, Tokyo Night Parade. After read I noticed there were several layers and the art needed its own reading. Taken on the surface, it is a sweet story about a young girl who wants to spend time with old friends from Japan, ones she has not seen since moving to New York. These friends are a bit different though, as they are the demons of Japanese folklore. And our young hero cannot see them […]
