The wise sense what is to come

The Collected Poems of C.P. Cavafy: A New Translation by C.P. Cavafy

February 24, 2019 by Dusty Highway Leave a Comment

I know very little about poetry and even less about how to write about poetry, so to quote Prince, forgive me if this goes astray. I first heard of Cavafy when I was browsing through a book of gay love poems at Barnes and Noble back in my early twenties when I was first coming out. The simplicity of the poem made me think he was an ancient, perhaps the male equivalent of Sappho, but when I found this book, The Collected Poems of C.P. […]

“but safe in sound you’ll go to sleep”

Nighttime Symphony by Timbaland

February 21, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I almost did not write a review for Nighttime Symphony by Timbaland, Christopher Myers and Kaa Illustration. As this picture book (out May 2019) is one of the books that make me think/say, “Book good. Read.” Of course, the Tarzan mentality only gets you so far. The review needs to talk about the story: The sounds of the city lull a baby to sleep. Of course, they are loud sounds, soft sounds, unique sounds to the city. The father is telling, in lyrical text, this […]

The Posey Ring: A Love Story by Bob Graham

February 20, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Walking up the stairs to the Children’s Department this morning, I looked up and there was this fabulous looking book cover. Just bright and which was opening (mostly) my not yet awake eyes. I stood precariously on the high metal staircase to take a photo of how cool it looked sitting there. Waiting for a reader. I then finished up those stairs to place in my hand, that teasing copy of The Posey Ring: A Love Story by Bob Graham. The story itself feels almost […]

Truth Be Told I Don’t Know How to Review Poetry…

Selected Poems by John Keats

February 19, 2019 by Lisa Bee 1 Comment

I’m not exactly sure how to go about this review because poetry is not exactly something I read often (at all, really), nor do I know much about it, so everything here will be coming from a place of very little knowledge. So then why did I choose to read this collection of poems? Because I had an itch to try something not really in my comfort zone, you know, branch out to some new forms and see how it goes. And why John Keats? […]

Poetry that is beautiful

Thrall by Natasha Trethewey

February 16, 2019 by Chris Leave a Comment

If you like poetry, you should read Natasha Trethewey. These poems are, on one hand, about her relationship to her father, and, on the other hand, the position that black people have been too often placed in by white people. Thrall is an interesting word choice because it means being in someone’s power. There is the power that family holds over us. There is the hold that the art that inspired some of these poems had on Trethewey. There is the sense of ownership that […]

Talking about a murmuration

One Dark Bird by Liz Garton Scanlon

February 14, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ever pick up a book and think, that it looks like an “X kind-of” book? I did with One Dark Bird by Liz Garton Scanlon. It looked like it would either be a book of one long poem or each page would have a mini-poem on it. It was neither. And both. This is mostly due to Fran Preston-Gannon’s cover illustration. This book just looks like a poetry book. There are bold, deep, rich colors. They are situated in such a way that they flow […]
