Get down and boogie!

Viloet’s Music by Angela Johnson

August 12, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The library trip of mine were I picked up some books, it was most fruitful in another ways. I also read a book on the way up the path to the crosswalk. A local magnet school and the library had paired up to do a Story Walk. This is when a book is put on signs (two pages at a time) and you read and look at the pictures as you walk along. This time it was Viloet’s Music by Angela Johnson. As I carefully […]

The graphic of the graphic novel

Stitches: A Memoir by David Small

August 12, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Stiches was part of my looking at the library shelves and coming home with three books. I lied when I had said I narrowed down the books from five, it was narrowed it down from seven. I had my eye on Watchmen and V is for Vendetta as well but when I saw a book by David Small (an illustrator I knew from children’s books) I figured, let’s go with that instead. Plus, the odd shape and the crazy zombies on the front just “spoke” […]

Sometimes you find a poem, sometimes it finds you

Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha Archer

August 12, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha Archer is almost a poem itself. It has some great illustrations that pop off the page. The colors (especially on the very last page) tell the story boldly. The idea of what a poem is more modern, flowery and more based in nature. While any age can have it read to them, due to the fact Daniel’s story is just his adventure to find what a poem is, the older child might appreciate the fact that a poem can […]

Your Fame Will Live, Your Glory Sung

Gilgamesh Retold by Jenny Lewis

July 30, 2019 by blauracke Leave a Comment

This is a retelling of the 4,000-year-old Epic of Gilgamesh, in which Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, abuses his power and insults the gods. The punishment he receives for his hubris subsequently leads him on a quest for immortality. I discovered this book by chance and bought it more or less on a whim, and wow, what a find. I only seldom read poetry, but this one captivated me from the start. The plot is pretty simple and straightforward, but it is all imbued with so […]

Salt the earth outside the wheelhouse

she just wants to forget by r. h. sin

July 26, 2019 by octothorp Leave a Comment

I don’t read much poetry, and I read even less inspirational literature, so this is a twofer for my Not My Wheelhouse square. I feel like I’ve been asked to review The Room. As a comedy, this book gets 1000/5 stars (skip to the end for some schadenfreude). As a deep work of inspirational poetry, zero stars and I want the half hour this took me to read back.  There is a reason poetry is out of my wheelhouse, it can be amazing or a […]

“A lengthy light bulb” from Teeth

Date & Time by Phil Kaye

July 26, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr11bingo #TheCollection Officially, I have not finished Phil Kaye’s debut poetry collection, Date & Time. However, I have about ten poems left, but feel confident I have gotten the point of his work. I will say that I am not sure of the title, Date & Time, other than saying he does do snapshots of different dates and times in his and his family lives; but I honestly think he might have come up with a stronger title. But that is just me and it […]
