Cover of the Faber edition of Selected Poems by Robert Graves

The broken images of Robert Graves

Selected Poems by Robert Graves

February 1, 2020 by tiny_bookbot 2 Comments

With 1917 potentially poised for success at the Oscars, it feels like a good moment to look at the work of a WWI poet, namely that of Robert Graves. Now, I didn’t read his Selected Poems (Faber & Faber, edited by Northern Irish poet Michael Longley) because of the film. If anything, it’s the other way around: I saw 1917 because I am teaching Graves’s poetry this semester to an upper-level class of English majors, and I was curious as to how well the film supplemented the poetry of […]

May your 2020 have this Swinging good book in it

Swing by Michael Hall

January 31, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Swing is a sweet story, if not a bit obvious. Michael Hall has created text and art that is simple. However, there are a couple pages do have some fun details to sniff out. There is nothing wrong with this book, but just does not a lot of umph to it. The letter O, E, V and L come together on a playground. They are different from each other: E is from that group called vowels; L is in the middle of the alphabet while […]

Nesting by Henry Cole

January 31, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Putting away future publications reader copies to our staff shelves, Nesting by Henry Cole came up. The blue of the cover popped up. I was not sure what was going on. Was it going to be about all birds, robins, hummingbirds? The contrast of the grey/white and blue was (yes, a bit dramatic) mesmerizing. I had put it in my, “Not reading now” pile, but kept thinking I probably should read it. It was not a wasted read. I give this book a five for […]

A Way with Wild Things by Larissa Theule

January 31, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Because of the cover of A Way with Wild Things I was not sure about that little girl. Was she going to be funny? Smart? Something else? It looked like it could be fun, but how was the “wild” going to be presented? I quickly learned that this was a story about having a knack with nature, a story about a young girl who is a little anxious in the “real world” and finally how she might have been a wallflower once, but now she […]

Intense happiness

Felicity by Mary Oliver

January 29, 2020 by Sophia 4 Comments

Every once in a while a poem is able to articulate a feeling or thought in a profound, emotional way that would never have occurred to me. I’m not a big reader of poetry and a lot of it is incomprehensible to me, so this doesn’t happen to me often. But I’m always hopeful. So, when I saw Narfna’s review of Felicity (2015) by Mary Oliver, I was intrigued. The promise of a short book with meaningful, understandable poems sounded fantastic. I also liked the […]

A Book of Love by Emma Randall

January 20, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Just when you think the holidays are over, the calendar tells you otherwise. February sees Valentines Day. And A Book of Love by Emma Randall would be the perfect gift to give if your sweetheart does not want flowers or candy. Or you are looking for an alternative to the traditional gift. And if your loved one likes sugary sweet picture book stories, with diverse characters and is a lovely story, just not my personal taste, then A Book of Love would be the perfect […]
