Tricks? Nope! Only Treats Here!

Goblin Moon by Jacqueline Rogers

Witch's Cat: Apply Within by Joy H. Davidson

The Ghosts Go Marching by Claudia H Boldt

Little Poet Edgar Allan Poe: Nevermore! by Kate Coombs

October 15, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Halloween is the most awesome holiday. I am known for going overboard for a costume (two and a half hours for hair and makeup anyone?) and scarfing down candy. But I also like the fun books that come out of it. Since this year, things are a little different and if you are not going to be able to (or do not want to) go on a traditional trick-or-treating night, I suggest finding these books and starting a reading treat night. Goblin Moon by Jacqueline […]

The journey we take to get where we are going

Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel

October 15, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My journey to Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel was, to say was odd, but normal for me. I knew of Bechdel’s Dykes to Watch Out for series. I have the collection on my TBR list. And I knew that they had this book when it came out. The store I work at hosted an event. (July 2018 to be exact) I was interested in but forgot (long story why) to attend. Flash forward to about two months ago when I was speaking […]

Ever read a book that makes you hurt? And you’re not sure if that’s a bad thing?

Joe Quinn’s Poltergeist by David Almond

October 15, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ever read a book that makes you emotionally hurt, but you are not sure if in a good or bad way? Happens every so often to me. And when it does, I know I have either read one of the most amazing things ever, or the biggest piece of crap ever written. Joe Quinn’s Poltergeist by David Almond (with illustrations created by Dave McKean) was one of those books. I was a bit confused about the theme of this book due to the fact you […]

The Dirty Half Dozen

Ways to Welcome by Linda Ashman

What's the Matter, Marlo? by Andrew Arnold

The Unicorn Came to Dinner by Lauren DeStefano

The Hidden Rainbow by Christie Matheson

All Welcome Here by James Preller

Jules vs. the Ocean by Jessie Sima

October 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I love working in a bookstore. When I have lunch and don’t feel like reading a novel, I can grab a picture book. If I am home and just can’t concentrate on the novel format, I grab a picture book. The below are The Dirty Half Dozen Picture Books that have been grabbed recently. Ways to Welcome by Linda Ashman and Joey Chou (rating 3): I liked the idea, but the execution was not really to my tastes. It would be a cute story time book […]

“At the barn fire of insanity”

The Luckiest Guy Alive by John Cooper Clarke

October 7, 2020 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr12bingo Repeat (for Pandemic) BINGO x2: vertical Uncannon to Repeat, horizontal Money to Violet Over the past seven months of pandemic quarantining, my husband and I have done a lot of mindless TV/video watching, and thanks to the smart TV, we aren’t just limited to regular TV fare but can watch anything that’s on the internet on our big screen. As a result, we seem to have subscribed to, and hence watch, more YouTube channels than anything else. We are big fans of British comedian […]

The waking dream of Alice Oswald’s sea-poems

Nobody by Alice Oswald

August 14, 2020 by tiny_bookbot Leave a Comment

Alice Oswald’s Memorial is one of my favorite poetry collections. Depending on whether you are looking at the American or UK cover, it is either a “version” or an “excavation” of Homer’s Iliad, and the trick that Oswald so deftly pulls off is that she only translates the deaths, interspersed with some of the epic similes. Gone is all the plot, the rage of this man and the glory of that: she pulls all these characters together in the democracy of death. The book is marked by […]
