My goodies from my Book Angel. Thank you to Mobius_Walker. It’s a snuggle baby kitty! And one awesome looking book of poetry. Can’t wait to have a cup of goodness!

Crossover by Kwame Alexander

December 13, 2020 by Leedock Leave a Comment

This gem was given to me by Black Raven through last year’s CBR holiday book exchange. Most likely, I would have never come across this book on my own, so a big thanks to Black Raven. It took me almost a year to crack it open but it was probably one of the best books that I read all year. Not to continue to beat the same sad drum, but I have had a hard time reading this year. I know that I am not […]

A rush through the author’s experience

Home Body by Rupi Kaur

December 12, 2020 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

Let me start by stating that my exposure to poetry is very limited. I have, to my knowledge, read only one or two full collections of poems, so take this entire review with a grain of salt. Home Body by Rupi Kaur is broken down into four parts: mind, heart, rest, and awake. In mind Kaur writes of her depression, anxiety, and her struggles with worth and acceptance. In heart, Kaur write of love: its loss, its elusion, and its impact. In rest, Kaur write of just that. […]

Life Through Poetry

Ain’t Never Not Been Black by Javon Johnson

December 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ain’t Never Not Been Black is a book I wish I did not have to rate. It is a personal read about the journey one person (our poet Javon Johnson) takes growing up a black and living as a black man in this country. It is well written in straight forward poems that combine the dark and hope of this journey. Johnson’s words are not set for anyone group of people. All people can relate to and learn from his words. The straight forwardness of […]

Home or on the road

Home Body by Rupi Kaur

November 27, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like poetry, but not all poetry. I prefer contemporary to classic. I like poems that are easy to understand, ones that are straight forward and one does not need to swim through “64 thousand-dollar words” to find the meaning of the poem. Home Body (the third collection of poetry Rupi Kaur) hits all the marks that I like. There are contemporary themes and writing style, straight forwardness and adult language, but it is not “sugary, literary, aren’t-I-smart-I-use-big-words” content. The themes of the poems you […]

Small poetry book; big punch

Crown Nobel by Bianca Phipps

November 25, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Maybe Crown Nobel was too short. Or maybe I was not the right reader for Bianca Phipps’ poetry collection. As there was something about this that was off for me. I knew what they were saying, but sometimes I was not sure what the theme of the poem was. It felt at times that the language was abstract. Or there were pieces missing in the story. However, it was an experience that I am glad I took. Phipps deals with serious subjects. But despite those […]
