When you do not know what to say, sing.

The President Sang Amazing Grace by Zoe Mulfor

February 17, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The President Sang Amazing Grace is one of those books that has less than 100 words (I assume as I am not counting). Therefore, how do you write about it? The only thing I can say is first what it is about: A young man was welcomed into a church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015. He seemed to pray along with the others. About an hour later, he would stand and take the lives of nine other people. And then, President Barack Obama sang […]

A couple of poets who know it

The Best Worst Poet Ever by Lauren Stohler

February 5, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I saw the cover of The Best Worst Poet Ever (with the word best scratched out) and thought, “Well that is a smidgen different.” And there was a pudgy stereotypical cat, and a funky pug on the cover. Okay, I like cats (even if they are snooty and the villain), but there has only ever been one pug for me (her name was Rosie/Rosa (depending on what they felt like calling her at the time) that farted, ate cat poop, was incontinent, got upset I […]

CBR13 #1 – Psychedelicate: The Luckiest Guy Alive by John Cooper Clarke

The Luckiest Guy Alive by John Cooper Clarke

February 1, 2021 by Siege Leave a Comment

So it’s been a while, but it’s never too late to try and get back into the swing of things. Every year is a new opportunity to try and do the Cannonball Read. I started out with a book by British poet John Cooper Clarke. I’ve seen Clarke several times as the Dictionary Corner guest on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and I always really enjoy him. It took me a while to get one of his books, though, since it seems that his […]

What happens when you ban freedom?

Banned Book Club by Kim Hyun Sook

January 28, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Banned Book Club is an interesting book. At first, I was not sure I liked or understood it. Yet, once I got deeper into it, I realized what was going on. I did wonder if this was based on anyone’s experiences, or a general look at the time. It is both. It is based on Kim Hyun Sook’s experiences and several experiences of others pulled into one story to protect those involved. Ko Hyung-Ju and Ryan Estrada due their parts to bring this graphic novel […]

A Bard, A Fae, A Wolf and a Crow walk into a bar and start a fight

Fantastic Tales of Nothing by Alejandra Green

January 28, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The back of this book, Fantastic Tales of Nothing by Alejandra Green, says if you like Amulet, Five Worlds and Estranged you will like this. And while I agree yes this is true, there are differences to the series you might want to look at: Amulet is light, like Fantastic, but Fantastic is a tad “meatier.” Five Worlds (or at least book one, which I read) might be closest, but again, Fantastic is meatier. However, Estranged is darker by a smidgen (not that it is […]

Not like I expected

Virgin by Analicia Sotelo

January 28, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have this as a rating of 3, but Virgin by Analicia Sotelo is more of a 3.5 rating. And not because this is a bad read, it is actually good. I enjoyed the straightforward text and imagery. However, sometimes she gets a bit “poetic” and too fanciful for my tastes. And while I like poetry, and “flowery” poetry has its place, I was not looking for it here. The mix of both straightforward and the flowery was not a hundred percent for me. Sotelo […]
