Bitter sweet goodbyes

The Sour Cherry Tree by Naseem Hrab

February 21, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I first saw The Sour Cherry Tree by Naseem Hrab, I thought it was going to be an Asian folktale. Instead, this lovely story of a granddaughter saying goodbye to a beloved grandfather is a realistic story with Arabic characters. But the great part is, it is relatable no matter your background. Anyone with a grandparent that maybe you did not have a terrible close relationship with but had a very special one will understand how the young girl feels the day she learns […]

Journey Around the Sun: The Story of Halley’s Comet by James Gladstone

February 21, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When a nonfiction book is written in a fiction format, this is one of my favorite ways of presenting it. Everything is accessible and able to be conveniently understood. It teases the interests and allows us to be happy with what we have or go on to explore more. In Journey Around the Sun: The Story of Halley’s Comet we have the story of Halley’s Comet being told by the comet itself. The voice of the comet is friendly and almost like a beloved grandparent. […]

To Change a Planet by Christina Soontorvat

February 21, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

To Change a Planet by Christina Soontorvat is a lovely story about how one small event, person, or thing, can have a global impact. And if each one of us bans together, we can try and help the issues we have created. Of course, there is little new to this concept presented in the pages of Soontorvat’s story. Yet, it is a nice book. It would be good for a classroom setting, or a quiet time read. The colorfully bold illustrations by Rahele Jomepour Bell […]

Just read the G-D book, okay?

The Blacker the Berry by Joyce Carol Thomas

February 21, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This lovely book of poems about being yourself that is gorgeously illustrated, called The Blacker the Berry created two main thoughts for me. First, why did they pick this poem instead of another to be the title? Color Struck would seem like a stronger move. Of course, this led to my self-discussion of “Well struck is a harsh word, and the person choosing probably did not want a word that has a negative connotation as the first thing you see.” And then that led to, […]

A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein

February 15, 2022 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

You love him. You hate him. But either way this classic is still here. I realized as I was reading A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein, I do not think I have actually read a Silverstein book cover to cover. Maybe The Giving Tree, but I could not say for sure.  I do know that I have read poems from/had poems read from a few books. And, in fact two that I remember from here, (though mostly the idea of them and not […]

Carry on: Poetry by Young Immigrants by Simon Boulerice

February 15, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Carry on: Poetry by Young Immigrants was a book I found on a site the store I work at uses for ordering. It might have been just a sample of the poetry, not the completed version, but either way, this book illustrated by Roge Girard is something worth looking into. Told from the point of view of young immigrants, each poem is a snapshot of thoughts, feelings, hopes, dreams, fears, and observations. We see how cold is experienced for the first time. How the thought […]
