Therapy Chickens: Let the Wisdom of the Flock Bring You Joy by Tedra Hamel

August 30, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you think, when it’s time for a chicken to lay her egg it’s a do or die moment? Like when a human really really has to go and there are four people ahead of you for the one working stall? I mean, does the chicken cross its legs (never mind the road) and squeeze the cheeks and say, “It’s not your turn yet?” (If you don’t know, like I didn’t, chickens can stand in line to wait to lay their eggs as, like anyone, […]

Headed to the Moon

Rocket Beams, Lunar Dreams by Chiara Colombi

August 29, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Rocket Beams, Lunar Dreams by Chiara Colombi and illustrated by Scott Magoon is due in February 2025. However, I am glad I had the opportunity to read via an online reader’s copy. The book’s theme is not new, but told in a way that even I learned a few things and I am terribly excited to put this on teacher and parent radars. The idea is about envy and jealousy. Rocket is ready to go to the moon. She can’t wait! Except at the last […]

How Mama Tree and the Forest woke Little Pin

Wake Up, Little Pin!: The Story of a Sleepy Sapling by Loretta Garbutt

August 29, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Wake Up, Little Pin!: The Story of a Sleepy Sapling by Loretta Garbutt and illustrated by  Marianne Ferrer came out in mid-March of 2024. However, I did not learn about it until August of that year. I found an online reader copy and it sounded interesting, but I was not sure at first if I wanted to read it. After a bit I said, why not read a book about a tree? I like trees. I like nature (as long as I’m not in it […]

Dr. Gordon Sato and the Mangrove Trees

The Mangrove Tree: Planting Trees to Feed Families by Susan L. Roth

August 29, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Mangrove Tree: Planting Trees to Feed Families by Susan L. Roth and Cindy Trumbore came out in 2018. However, recently I found an online reader copy from my usual online reading site. I was intrigued, after all what was a mangrove tree? (It sounded familiar.) And it is always  well, not fun, but fun to learn how food issues are trying to be solved.  What came from this read was a book that has several parts. First, there are three ways to read the […]

The plight of bees done poetically

Milk Without Honey by Hanna Harms

August 29, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Milk Without Honey by Hanna Harms (translated by Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp and Sarah Wyndham Lewis doing the foreword) is a clever, poetic look at the loss of the pollinator, especially the honeybee. The author’s illustrations are both a bit realistic but also interestingly abstract. The use of the color yellow, as well as black and white, is important. The overall feel is the content is for anyone, but the way it is presented might not be for everyone. However, it is for the strong teen […]

Melt Your Pencil : A Super Fun Activity Book! by Chris Uphues

August 29, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Overall this is a delightful book. I read Melt Your Pencil: A Super Fun Activity Book! as an online reader, therefore, that made it hard/impossible to draw the lines for the mazes or connect the dots puzzles, and of course, coloring was out of the question, but some can/could be done visually.  This activity book has several positives to it. There are a variety of different puzzles, coloring options, and mazes. Things are fun, clever and should appeal to most girls. This leads to the […]
