To Start A War: How the Bush Administration Took America Into Iraq by Robert Draper

September 12, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

When Dick Cheney endorsed Kamala Harris this past week, I blanched. I understand the political appeal of Cheney’s endorsement. And I’m on board for whatever it takes to win this election. I am a single issue voter and that issue is my deep desire to not have Donald Trump involved in any aspect of my life. But it’s still disheartening to watch people who want Trump held accountable cheer for Cheney because we let all of these folks off the hook. Robert Draper tries to […]

The Courage Party: Helping Our Resilient Children Understand and Survive Sexual Assault by Joyce Brabner

September 11, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

TRIGGER WARNING (including but not limited to): talk of Sexual Assault on a minor; other sexual assaults; frank language    A few weeks ago, I started a sad, but interesting, book. It’s about a child (Danielle) who was sexually assaulted by an older boy. But that’s just the start. Because her guardian, Joyce, has always been honest with her; told her how to act in situations, especially this one; she is able to fight and run off. And unlike many stories like this, our young […]

In Praise of Mystery by Ada Limón

Wings of an Eagle: The Gold Medal Dreams of Billy Mills by Billy Mills and Donna Janell Bowman

It's Fall! (Celebrate the Seasons #1) by Renee Kurilla

September 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The only issue with picture books is that if you try to write a full review for each individual book it is hard to do. After all, you’re trying to write a 250 word review for a book that might have 50 pages and 200 words. But, that’s why a good Picture Book Roundup is a great way to find books for you to peruse!  Written by Ada Limón and illustrated by Peter Sís, In Praise of Mystery is a romantic and poetic book about […]

Long title, short life, but what an impact

Remembering Rosalind Franklin: Rosalind Franklin & the Discovery of the Double Helix Structure of DNA by Tanya Lee Stone

September 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The title of the book Remembering Rosalind Franklin: Rosalind Franklin & the Discovery of the Double Helix Structure of DNA  says pretty much everything you need to know about this author Tanya Lee Stone and illustrator Gretchen Ellen Powers book. But of course, there is more and I need to write a longer review! I read this via an online reader copy, though it came out in February of 2024. Which I think is a little appropriate. This scientist is not well known due to […]

Marjory's River of Grass: Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Fierce Protector of the Everglades by Josie James

September 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was reading Marjory’s River of Grass: Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Fierce Protector of the Everglades by Josie James as an online reader copy on my phone. Which was a special delight in itself as I have recently had issues with my normal online site and my phone not being able to communicate with each other. The other delight was how lovely James’ book is. This is a delightful book about one woman, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and how she made the Everglades not only pretty awesome […]

A Tree Is a Community by David L. Harrison

September 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Usually I prefer a non-rhyming format when it comes to reading a picture book, especially or even though it is for a younger audience. However, A Tree Is a Community might have benefited from a rhyme format. Yet, the way it is presented is well done and is executed well. The text is wonderfully expressive and poetic (the leaves are like dresses; seeds grow and WHOOSH!) and I think it would be fun to read aloud (personally I think a one-on-one setting is best, but […]
