Sitcoms opening people’s minds and hearts

Hi Honey, I'm Homo! by Matt Baume

October 21, 2024 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I like to listen to audiobooks in my car, and I found Hi Honey, I’m Homo!: Sitcoms, Specials, and the Queering of American Culture (2023) by Matt Baume on NPR’s Favorite Books List. Baume discusses how sitcoms used characters and plots involving gay/trans characters or lightly disguised allegory that may have helped middle America become a little more tolerant than before. Because this book generally goes in chronological order, many of the shows that Baume begins writing about were ones I was not familiar with. These included Soap and All in […]

A Personal Story of Deconstruction

The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church by Sarah McCammon

October 20, 2024 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

The story: The Exvangelicals is a nonfiction book written by Sarah McCammon, who grew up in the white evangelical Christian movement in the 80s and 90s. As an adult, she deconstructed (began examining and questioning her religious beliefs), and discovered that many others who had grown up in the same circumstances as her were doing the same. The book includes recollections from her childhood and her deconstruction process, interviews with others who have left the white evangelical church, and information on the history and current status of […]

“I want – I want – I want – was all that she could think about – but just what this real want was she did not know.”

Carson McCullers: A Life by Mary V. Dearborn

October 20, 2024 by Pooja Leave a Comment

CBR16 Bingo: Pride – McCullers and many people in her life were queer, one of the main struggles of her life was trying to come to terms with and better understand that queer identity, which also infused her writing. Carson McCullers is one of the most acclaimed authors of the Southern Gothic genre, but she was also a complicated woman with a messy personal life who constantly strove toward goals that, though she did not reach always reach them, created beautiful things along the way. […]

“Now did you think it all through? All these things will catch up to you…” (Double bingo)

Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou

October 20, 2024 by Malin Leave a Comment

Nowhere Book Bingo: From a genre you’ve never read (true crime) CBR16 Bingo: Fiasco (Theranos was a massive fraud and a fiasco) I’ve owned this book since 2020 and am pretty sure I picked it up in an e-book sale because of the many Cannonball reviews I’ve read about it over the years. Not being particularly interested in the tech world or medical science, and certainly, not someone who reads a lot of business news, I didn’t really hear about this case as it was […]

“Tech is racist and sexist and ableist because the world is so. Computers just reflect the existing reality and suggest that things will stay the same—they predict the status quo.”

More than a Glitch: Confronting Race, Gender, and Ability Bias in Tech by Meredith Broussard

October 19, 2024 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Meredith Broussard’s More than a Glitch took me a long time to read (nearly two months) for such a short book (around 190 pages before Notes and Bibliography). But if you happened to attend Cannonball Read’s Murderbot book club then you got a glimpse at part of what was bothering me about reading this book right now – and why it was so important that I do so. I’m having big issues with the onslaught of AI (specifically generative AI) especially with so little oversight […]

SMBC but in book form + with SPACE

A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through? by Kelly Weinersmith, Zach Weinersmith

October 17, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

If you’re a fan of the Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (SMBC) webcomic, you’ll definitely enjoy this and don’t really need to read this review. Kelly and Zach Weinersmith strike the perfect balance of humor and science, creating an entertaining blend that hits the sweet spot for lifelong nerds (hello!) who love learning for the sake of it. There’s a type of reader who thrives on the intersection of humor and knowledge—the kind of person who wants to learn everything but laments the fact there’s no […]
