“resting is a more important craft than writing”

Nerve: Unlearning Workshop Ableism to Develop Your Disabled Writing Practice by Sarah Fawn Montgomery

June 25, 2025 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Many of my hobbies are word-based. I read books, I review them, and I write short form narratives. The writing is for fun, something that I’ve reclaimed as enjoyable following academic writing. I have a group of friends that get together and workshop what we’re working on a few times a year – although most of our time is spent visiting as we don’t see each other much outside of these meetups anymore.   My writing has always been in fits and starts. If my brain […]

Hit Girls: Britney, Taylor, Beyoncé, and the Women Who Built Pop's Shiniest Decade by Nora Princiotti

June 24, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Nora Princiotti is a podcast host for The Ringer who was mainly covering the NFL until her and Nathan Hubbard started hosting the Every Single Album podcast, on which, per the title, they would cover the careers of the biggest pop stars alive, one album at a time. I started listening to the podcast as a relative latecomer to Taylor Swift’s discography, and their episodes on her career are some of their best. In 2024, the Year of the Pop Girl, they greatly expanded their […]

Night & Day by John Connolly

Night & Day by John Connolly

June 24, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

This took me several months to complete and I really wish I had DNFed it. I didn’t because I love John Connolly so much, but honestly this anthology was not great. And when I realized 50 percent of the book is in essence a biography of Christopher Lee and his involvement with a film called “Horror Fest” I should have been fully done. I adore the Charlie Parker series since Connolly has done a great job of blending mystery/horror/magical realism, etc. I was hoping for […]

All About Norma Desmond

Close-Up on Sunset Boulevard: Billy Wilder, Norma Desmond, and the Dark American Dream by Sam Staggs

June 23, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

More than seventy years after its initial release, Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard is justly remembered as a stone-cold classic. It’s vision of the seamier side of Hollywood has become definitive in many ways, from the way has-been stars are frequently compared to its doomed heroine Norma Desmond to the way people who haven’t seen a frame of it still know the immortal closing line, “All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.” The film’s legacy has only been buttressed by the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical […]

Pigments, Paint, and People

What is Color? The Global and Sometimes Gross Story of Pigments, Paint, and the Wondrous World of Art by Steven Weinberg

June 16, 2025 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

I signed up for my core science requirement in my sophomore year of undergrad. I heard from my advisor and my classmates that the color science course was a good one for theatre majors, fun and easy. Then, on the first day of class, the professor thoroughly destroyed both of those rumors. I dropped it immediately, forgot about my science requirement entirely, and ended up fulfilling it with an 8 AM astronomy course the summer AFTER I should have graduated (I got a C on […]

“I’m such a loser in the game of life.”

Endgame: Bobby Fischer's Remarkable Rise and Fall - from America's Brightest Prodigy to the Edge of Madness by Frank Brady

June 16, 2025 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I could not put this book down. Frank Brady’s Endgame covers the entirety of Bobby Fischer’s life, from his youth to his unglamorous end. Fischer is presented as a magnetic character, simultaneously pulling and repelling friends, opponents, and the public at large. Had Fischer not had his caustic personality, it is hard to imagine how high he could’ve ascended in his mastery of chess. However, he did have a caustic personality, as well as a hateful belief system, and a fascination with younger women. Outside of […]
