A Series of Cool Stories That Somehow Fit Together

August 19, 2014 by Ewandini 1 Comment

The title of this review explains a lot about the book. A boy’s parents were killed by a man named Jack. The boy wanders to a graveyard, then he gets taken in by the spirits. They don’t know what to do with him and then a Lady in Grey comes and tells them to take him in. He doesn’t know his own name cause he’s only a little boy so they call him Nobody. His guardian is not necessarily human, but as soon as you […]

A Serial Killer Haunts Post-WWII Italy

August 18, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Bojhalian takes us on a visit to Italy’s beautiful Tuscany during one of the most horrifying periods in that country’s history, when the German occupation had splintered the nation between the resistance, the collaborators, and the majority caught in between who mostly struggled to survive without selling their souls to the devil. But beyond a thought-provoking examination of choices and consequences under wartime conditions, Bojhalian also throws us into the middle of a hunt for a serial killer 10 years after the war’s end, a […]

An unhappy Danish murder mystery with a science twist

August 15, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Perhaps because of all the praise heaped on this book, I found The Dinosaur Feather to be one of the more disappointing murder mysteries I’ve read in a while. In a nutshell, the plot is centered on a furious and long-running cross-Atlantic brawl between two respected paleontologists over whether birds evolved from dinosaurs or are their own separate species (something which has been definitively resolved since, which in my view takes the wind a little bit out of the author’s sails). The strange and very […]

The one where the guy isn’t quite as hot as Ranger, but he’ll do

August 13, 2014 by Lynn Leave a Comment

Oh, Janet. I love you. I love your slightly control freak women who don’t exactly have a handle on their lives, your devilishly handsome men who like to live in the grey area of morality, and most especially, the wacky hijinks you cook up. The Chase picks up where The Heist left off, with FBI Special Agent Kate O’Hare and master criminal Nick Fox (get it with the names?) secretly teaming up to recover a Chinese artifact that has gone missing. See, the Chinese loaned […]

The one where the crazy woman is better written than the crazy woman from Tampa

August 13, 2014 by Lynn 1 Comment

So it turns out that a) I forgot to post some links, and b) I’m crappy at writing reviews. But with the start of the school year (where the hell did summer go?), maybe I’ll get my act together. It’s impossible to review this book without spoilers, but since I think I’m the last person on Earth to read this, I’m not too worried I’m going to upset anyone. Either way, fair warning: spoilers ahead. Told in alternate voices, a technique I’m not a huge […]

The Tourist that isn’t the Depp movie

August 11, 2014 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Though I’m a fan of fiction and mysteries I don’t often pick up spy thrillers but my boyfriend enjoyed it so I figured I would give it a go, and I was not disappointed. (It didn’t hurt that the cover boasted a beaming recommendation from the one and only Stephen King.) Milo Weaver is a Tourist, a member of black ops of “The Company,” ie, the CIA and he is as good at his job as he is unhappy. I don’t want to say much […]
