It’s like Rear Window but with more butts of malmsey

September 7, 2014 by drmllz Leave a Comment

The Daughter of Time (1951) is the first novel by Josephine Tey that I’ve read, and it’s a rather unconventional mystery, so I have no idea how the style relates to any of her other detective fiction. Based around the aphorism that “Truth is the daughter of time, not authority” (Sir Francis Bacon), the novel, via Scotland Yard Detective Alan Grant, investigates whether Richard the Third really murdered his nephews in the tower. Grant is laid up in hospital and bored; a friend brings him […]

An amusing contemporary romance with adultery and murder. No, really.

September 7, 2014 by Malin 6 Comments

MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE PLOT OF THIS BOOK IN THE REVIEW: Maddie Faraday is cleaning out her husband’s car and discovers a pair of women’s underpants under the seat that certainly aren’t hers. This isn’t the first time he’s cheated on her, and she decides that enough is enough. Even though she knows her mother and much of their little town will be utterly scandalised if she files for divorce, she just cannot take it any more. That C.L, the cute guy she lost her […]

Sexism and Murder: Women Pioneers in Atlanta in 1974

September 6, 2014 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Before reading Cop Town (2014), I was unfamiliar with Karin Slaughter and not looking to read any bestselling thrillers. But then I happened to see the author on television, talking about her latest book. Slaughter mentioned that she set Cop Town in Atlanta, Georgia in 1974 because she was interested in the restrictions and challenges facing women in that period. She talked about women not being able to find housing or even get a credit card without their husband’s approval. A restrictive society, indeed, and […]

2 for 1: Harry Potter and the Cuckoo’s Calling and Harry Potter and the Silkworm

September 1, 2014 by Willynillyone Leave a Comment

The Cuckoo’s Calling and The Silkworm are the first two entries in a new detective series featuring Cormoran Strike and written by much-beloved J.K. Rowling (her pseudonym should hopefully not be a spoiler, as it has been well-publicized and Rowling has been interviewed as Galbraith by now). Strike is a veteran and an amputee, struggling to turn a profit as a private detective in The Cuckoo’s Calling when he is approached to investigate the death of a famous model Lula Landry. Strike is accompanied by […]

My first Agatha Christie novel!

August 31, 2014 by tillie Leave a Comment

The beauty of letting people into your life is that they bring you new perspective; new art; new music and new books. And reading the books recommended to you by people you love is such a unique way to get to know that person better. Or as it was phrased in my case “You’ve never read Agatha Christie? I don’t think I can truly love you until you do!” Thankfully I loved the book ad so my boyfriend doesn’t have to dump me just yet. […]

Broken city and a broken Batman

August 30, 2014 by tillie Leave a Comment

Broken city revisists the concept of Bruce as the broken Batman. It is a brilliant juxtaposing of the brokeness in Bruce Wayne/Batman and the city. It is in this book as it is in most Batman books: Healing a broken city is part of healing himself; “I’d turn the entire city into my doctor” The murder of an unmarried, pregnant woman starts Bruce on an investigation. The brother, Angel Lupo is involved somehow as is his girlfriend. The brother loved his sister and was overprotective […]
