An intriguing international crime thriller

October 25, 2014 by bonnie Leave a Comment

Last year, I reviewed Nairobi Heat for CBR5. I remember liking it, with some caveats, and I had mentioned those. Ngugi has greatly improved with his second novel, and I really hope that he continues this series. Detective Ishmael has decided to stay in Kenya and make a life for himself. He has fallen in love with refugee Muddy, and is a partner to the engimatic O. Together, their detective business is struggling to break even, until a man shows up dead in a nearby […]

Yeah, the criminal justice system doesn’t work that way

October 25, 2014 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Karen Robards is another–original–favorite romance author of mine. I found her ages ago. Sometimes her books can get a little too violent and bloody, but they’re consistently fast-paced and easy to read. I usually enjoy them. So when I saw Hunted (2013) by Karen Robards on bookshelves, I picked it up–at the library (because I’m cheap). Quite often with Robards comes murder and mystery and Hunted is no different. Reed Ware is a New Orleans Homicide Detective and his fated love interest, Caroline Wallace, is […]

Nerds, gosh! So nerdy, amirite?

October 24, 2014 by Bothari43 2 Comments

This book sounded so promising when I found it at the used bookstore. A murder mystery that takes place at a science fiction convention! How fun! However…is there a word for what happens when a roast crosses a line? Oh yeah: mean. Appin Dungannon is the author of a hugely popular fantasy series about Tratyn Runewind. He’s also obnoxious, demanding, and rude to his fans. When he’s murdered while attending Rubicon as guest of honor, there are lots of suspects. James Owens Mega (pseudonym Jay […]

Amazing Amy is a “Cool Girl”

October 22, 2014 by xoxoxoe 1 Comment

I recently finished reading Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl. I wanted to read it before I saw the David Fincher film. In a way, I wish I had seen the film first, as the book was so fresh in my mind, and so riveting a read, that I may not have been as blown away by the movie as I could have been. Gone Girl is structured as a “he said,” “she said” novel. It would not be giving too much away to say that both the he and […]

How Not to Do Marriage

October 22, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Nick Dunne’s beautiful wife Amy disappears on the day of their fifth wedding anniversary. Through diary entries from Amy’s diaries, the readers see how the couple met and fell in love, when they were both magazine writers in New York. Two layoffs and a move back to Nick’s hometown in Missouri later, taking care of his ailing parents, and things are no longer so idyllic. The last two years of their marriage have clearly not been all that great and Nick quickly becomes […]

Joyland by Stephen King

October 21, 2014 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Joyland was good fun, and hits many of my important Stephen King traits: set decades ago, coming of age, likable main character (I was a bit in love with Dev by the end), creepy ass setting (summer job at an old amusement park), good group of friends, fun lingo (carny-from-carny!) and a slightly otherworldy kid (I was so hoping this would rope in Dark Tower somehow, but no luck) with a tough ass mom. I love you, Stephen King, and I don’t care who knows […]
