Poirot doesn’t impress in his first story

December 23, 2014 by AamilTheCamel Leave a Comment

Fortieth book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. I like mysteries and thrillers, but this one didn’t impress me much. It might be because Agatha was such a pioneer in this genre that a lot of other writers must have borrowed from her and so, this particular story (the first perhaps, in her famous Hercule Poirot series) appears to be far too familiar. The plot was quite simple. I was even able to guess the most likely culprits. However, as soon as Hercule starts to […]

Carnival of Fools

December 20, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

This is another VF read from earlier in the year, same month as Undead and Unwed. Hence reading two vamp romances at the same time. In similar fashion, the characters seem to have questionable intelligence. However, at least this one had two enjoyable enough mysteries intertwined with the romance. A Girl’s Guide to Vampires is the first entry in the Dark Ones series by Ms. MacAlister. Joy and her friend Roxy end up in eastern europe working a book fair (Can I haz your job, please!). They decided to […]

King Kong meets Homer in a less than successful adventure

December 19, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Although this is not their first “Gideon Crew” novel, it is the first I have read and while it was entertaining, it was also a “lightweight.” These authors’ “Pendergast” series has lots of fantastical plots, and yet the protagonist is such a weirdly compelling character with such a mysterious backstory, the villains so devious, the plots so complex, and the locations so atmospheric as to just pull you along for the whole ride. The Lost Island has a fun opening gambit, but a literary plotline […]
