Not your typical boarding school brats

December 30, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

The Secret Place by Tana French was far better than I’d expected. I picked it up because it gets great reviews and because I was interested in moving away from the more romantic fare that I had been reading and back into a mystery. I didn’t realize it until after I’d finished the book, but this is the fifth in the Dublin Murder squad series, and while it stands on it’s own, I have the feeling that there were some references to the previous novels that I didn’t […]

Miss Marple’s Last Case?

December 30, 2014 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

Technically, this was Agatha Christie’s last book, even though it wasn’t the last one she wrote. According to Wikipedia, it was published after her death. Gwenda Reed comes to England to find a house for her and her husband. She buys a place called Hillside, which feels familiar to her for some reason. She starts renovations, and has a couple of flashback like incidents. She goes to London to visit with family, and meets Miss Marple. They go to see a play, which freaks Gwenda […]

December 30, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Honoria Todd is on the run from vampire nobles in Bec McMaster’s Kiss of Steel. Her father was murdered while working on a vamp cure for the Echelon, the near-immortal royalty who injected themselves with the virus. She’s forced to flee with her sister and brother into the night promising her father never to let them have his notes. She lives under false name in the rookeries of Whitechapel. She lies to get a job working as linguist in the rich part of town to make […]

Morse the Third

December 30, 2014 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

This is my third and final Morse book, at least for a while. After three in a row, I got kind of tired of him. Here, we’re dealing with the Oxford Foreign Examinations Syndicate. It’s a group that handles school exams all over the world, including the Persian Gulf (that may be important). The book starts with a disagreement about who will be joining the syndicate, and somehow the rebel of the group reverse-psychologys them into hiring a guy they don’t really want: Nicholas Quinn. […]

Morse the Second

December 30, 2014 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

The second Morse book starts with a man who has interviewed to be the headmaster of a school in Oxford, the Roger Bacon Comprehensive School. He meets a girl at a bus stop, and they hook up. Like you do. The girl turns out to be from the school. Her name is Valerie, and a year later, she is missing. Morse does not investigate the original missing person report. That was Chief Inspector Ainley, who was just killed in a car accident. Morse picks up […]

The first Inspector Morse

December 30, 2014 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

I loved the Inspector Morse mystery shows, and was very sad when the actor who played him (John Thaw) passed away. I thought he was such an interesting, layered character. At least the way that Thaw played him. The first spin off, Inspector Lewis, is great. Lewis was always a great character on the show as well. And the new one, Endeavour? I freaking love that show and can’t wait until the next season. Young Morse may be even more intriguing than older Morse, although […]
