If you ever get to Greenwich, here’s what you do: stroll up the hill, acquaint yourself with the meridian, have a cup of tea at the tea house, then stroll down, buy lunch at the food court – I recommend the sushi, though the Ethiopian stand is pretty good too – and eat it at the park next to the conservatoire; if the weather’s good, the windows will be open and you’ll be greeted by a cacophony of instruments and voices. Make your way past […]
Diamonds, Dames, and Danger!
I’ve been reading the Ian Fleming Bond books for the last couple of years in order of release. Diamonds Are Forever is the 4th full length Bond novel and like its predecessors much more focused on tension and mystery than over the top action and unbelievable circumstances. This time out, the British secret service has tasked Bond with discovering the head of a diamond smuggling operation. This assignment pits Bond against a crime organization known as the Spang Brothers and puts him in the company […]
A Rowling by any other name is just as fantastic
I find it hard to write about The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith without acknowledging that J.K. Rowling wrote the book under the Galbraith psuedonym. So yes, J.K. Rowling wrote this book. Thematically, The Cuckoo’s Calling shares little with the Harry Potter stories. It stars a washed up private eye and features quite a bit of sex, violence and swearing. But if you like the Harry Potter universe for Rowling’s incredible writing, her ability to plot and her attention to detail, then I bet you’ll like this, too. Cormoran Strike […]
Southern Smartass Meets British Ghosthunters
I apologize because this got a little long and away from me! To be fair, I was reviewing two books… Today we are doing a 2-for-1, since these are the first two books in Maureen Johnson’s Shades of London series. The third book just came out (I got my copy today!), so I wanted to re-read the first two and catch myself up on the story. I sped through these books. I am an unapologetic fan of Maureen and will rabidly consume anything she writes. This […]
Alternative Title: Miss Pym is an Awful House Guest, For Many Reasons
Tey was mostly overshadowed in her lifetime by making the mistake of writing mystery novels around the same time as Agatha Christie. I first picked up a Tey book a few years ago (it was The Franchise Affair) and was somewhat surprised that Tey was kind of a best kept secret. And then I read Miss Pym Disposes and was disappointed. Of course, in my super scientific sample size of two, this just leaves Tey at a wash. Miss Pym miraculously wrote a book about […]
No sir, no relief. Violent Crimes only. Murder Squad.
Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg has been promoted to Commissaire Principal and transferred to the Brigade Criminielle attached to the 13th arrondissement. This means all murder, all the time: Their job had one name and one name only: murder. Murder ad infinitum, without a broken pane to let the healthy gust of teenage delinquency take you mind off the subject; murder ad aeternam, unrelieved by having to lend a handkerchief to the nice young lady who’d just lost her keys, her address book and a love letter. It […]
