Peter Grant is a probationary officer with the London Metropolitan Police when he, one night takes a witness statement from an individual who just happens to be a ghost. Unusual as this is, it saves Peter from a life of tedium in the Case Progression Unit (basically doing other cops’ paperwork for them) and to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, who just happens to be a wizard. Peter becomes the first wizard’s apprentice in England for more than 50 years, but Harry Potter this is […]
The tiny blonde one is growing up and progressing as a detective
Disclaimer! I was given an ARC of this through NetGalley in return for a fair and unbiased review. Readers should be aware that this is the second book of Veronica Mars mysteries. Readers should probably watch the movie (it’s on Netflix) and read the first book before reading this. If you’re not caught up, there will be spoilers in the review below. Veronica Mars is hired by the insurance agents for the Neptune Grand, to prove that one of the hotel’s staff members didn’t assault […]
Fear of the dark
In this, the fourth Aimee Leduc book, Aimee is attacked and left blinded. In the next passage over another young woman is killed and the flics are quick to blame the “Beast of the Bastille”, a notorious serial killer who has recently been set free on a technicality, for both attacks. Even in her vulnerable state, Aimee can “smell” there is something wrong with this pat answer and sets about solving this latest mystery. Her partner Rene comes to the fore as he is called […]
Yeah, I Need A Hug
Wanna go down a really, really dark rabbit hole and feel pretty gross about the world you live in when you come back out? Then read Robert Pobi’s American Woman, this book will suit all your squicky needs! Let me first say that my mom recommended this book to me. This reminds me that she reads some twisted materials…but she makes really good suggestions! So thanks Ma (she signed up for Cannonball Read, then punked out and is now a lurker–yeah, I’m calling you out, […]
It might involve ponies.
Mr. Kiss and Tell is the second of two books contracted after the Kickstarted movie in 2014. Both books have done a great job taking the Veronica Mars world, escalating it, and translating it to the medium of books. I also really like what they’re doing with Veronica’s character (and the other characters). They’re allowing them to grow and change. These characters haven’t just been held in stasis in the nine years that have elapsed since the third season of the TV show ended. This […]
The view from the train ain’t always the same.
I’m not quite sure The Girl on the Train deserves all the hype it’s being given, but it’s a fast-paced psychological thriller/mystery, and I think it succeeds handily in being exactly what the author wanted it to be. I didn’t NEED to read it, and you don’t either, but I’m glad that I did. As is always the case with these sorts of books, the less said about the book the better, but I do want to take a second to talk about some things: […]
