Live and Let Die

February 25, 2015 by katie71483 Leave a Comment

Victor Bayne lives in a slightly different America in Among the Living. In his America, it’s commonly accepted that there are people with varying degrees of psychic ability, and many of those train to be cops. It’s much easier to solve crime if you have a leg up, after all. Their partners are ALWAYS “Stiffs”, or people with no psychic ability, because their detective work is somehow more creditable if verified by a normal person. The idea is that the psychic will use their abilities […]

A return to form

February 25, 2015 by janniethestrange 1 Comment

After my miserable experience with the last Aimee Leduc book, I approached this with more than a little trepidation. I am extremely happy to say that it was just a little bump along the cobblestone streets and Aimee and Rene are back with a vengeance. Yves, Aimee’s on again, off again paramour, the world travelling investigative reporter appears out of nowhere one warm August night. The last she knew, he was in Cairo and they had parted on not terribly friendly terms. But there he […]

A Harlan Coben mystery which failed to inspire

February 25, 2015 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Oh well, you can’t win them all. Coben’s novels are generally consistently good, and while The Woods was well enough written, with the typical surprise twists and turns that are standard in a good Coben novel, it wasn’t enough for me to give this novel more than a 2 star, I’m afraid.   County prosecutor Paul Copeland is knee-deep in a rape case that he is determined to prosecute to the end. Two snarky frat boys from wealthy families lured a stripper and single mother […]

Baby Blues

February 25, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

An abandoned baby? Really? Ugh. Yeah, this, the seventh in the Aimee Leduc investigations series just left me cold. From the opening scene, where Aimee gets a mysterious late night call to rush down to the courtyard to discover an abandoned infant I had an uneasy feeling about this book.  Aimee inexplicably decides to care for the baby while investigating where she came from, enlisting the help of Rene, her partner. The mystery itself, involving increasingly violent clashes between environmental activists and an oil company was […]

Chasing Ghosts

February 23, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

Murder in Montmartre is the sixth book in the Aimee Leduc series. Aimee is once again enmeshed in a dangerous investigation, trying to clear a childhood friend of murder. Laure’s papa was a flic, just like Aimee’s, and she followed in her father’s footsteps, finally gaining a posting. One night, while attending a retirement party, Laure invites Aimee to come along and see some of her father’s old colleagues. She hasn’t been there long when Laure gets into an argument with her partner, Jaques. They […]

Medieval Murder Mystery with a plague twist? Sure.

February 22, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

Yet another of my Kindle deals – I love my Kindle cheapies. To a point. This one is a murder mystery, which I like. It takes place in 1666 in London, which I also like. Oh, and plague is breaking out. I don’t really like plague, but the black death has always been pretty interesting. In this one, we’ve got Charlie Tuesday (the day he was put into the foundling hospital – no, seriously, that’s why). He’s a thief-taker, sort of a middle ages private […]
